Mahindra Scorpio Overview

The upcoming Mahindra SUVs in 2026 lineup continues to evolve but the Scorpio Classic remains a staple since its original debut in 2002, with a tough, featuring a tough body-on-frame, high ground clearance (around 209 mm), and seating for 7 or 9 passengers, making it ideal for family use and tough Indian roads.
Under the hood, it is powered by a 2.2-litre Gen-2 mHawk 4-cylinder diesel engine, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) layout. While it skips an automatic transmission or a 4x4 drivetrain, it compensates with strong mid-range torque, heavy-duty utility, an ARAI-claimed fuel efficiency of 14.44 kmpl, and reliable off-road capability.
Additionally, equipped with a 22.86cm touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, dual-tone upholstery and cruise control, the Scorpio Classic successfully blend go-anywhere boldness with essential modern comforts.
Engine and Performance
Scorpio Classic comes with a 2.2-litre Gen-2 mHawk diesel engine, paired with a turbocharger that helps improve power delivery while maintaining efficiency. This updated powertrain incorporates an aluminium block and other lightweight components, shedding approximately 55 kg compared to the earliest cast-iron predecessor, noticeably reducing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels and improving overall efficiency.
In terms of output, it generates an output of 130 hp at 3750 rpm and a 300 Nm of peak torque spanning between 1600-2800 rpm, with Mahindra claiming that around 77% of this torque (roughly 231 Nm) is accessible as low as 1000 rpm.
Additionally, this power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission (with cable shift), with no automatic option available.
fuel economy
According to ARAI certifications, it delivers a claimed fuel efficiency of around 14.44 kmpl to 15.0 kmpl. In typical real-world conditions, fuel efficiency is likely to be lower, with city driving returning around 11-13 kmpl, while highway runs can see figures closer to 14-16 kmpl.
Also equipped with a 60-litre fuel tank, the Scorpio Classic provides a driving range of approximately 800 to 900 kilometers on a full tank.
interior
The Scorpio Classic cabin features an upright dashboard in a dual-tone beige-black theme, gloss black inserts, and faux-wood accents. Materials include durable fabric upholstery, vinyl elements, and a faux leather-wrapped steering wheel, while hard, textured plastics are used for durability.
In terms of seating, it is available in 7-seater (captain chairs or bench in second row, front-facing or removable third-row bench) or 9-seater (side-facing jump seats in third row) configurations, offering a high, commanding front position with good cushioning, while rear space is adequate for adults in the second row and occasional use in the third.
Infotainment includes a 9-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, USB, AUX, and phone screen mirroring, along with steering-mounted audio controls but with no native Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. Driver features include height adjustment, tilt-adjustable steering, and an analogue-digital instrument cluster.
Additionally, storage is basic, with glove box, centre console pockets, cup holders, roof-mounted sunglass holder, and door pockets, while boot space stands at 460 litres (with third row folded/removed in applicable layouts).
Other features include rear AC vents, fully automatic temperature control (FATC), armrests, and extended power windows.
exterior
The Scorpio Classic has undergone multiple facelifts in the past, but the current model has a high appeal in both style and appearance. Measuring 4456 mm in length, 1820 mm in width (excluding ORVMs) and 1995 mm in height, with a 2680 mm wheelbase, it delivers a tall, imposing stance complemented by 209 mm ground clearance for confident handling on varied Indian terrain.
The front fascia showcases a bold grille with vertical chrome slats and the signature Twin Peaks logo, flanked by projector headlamps (with LED eyebrows and daytime running lamps on higher variants), plus front fog lamps on top trims. A muscular bonnet with hood scoop adds character, while the side profile includes prominent muscular cladding (painted or dual-tone on select variants) and 43.18 cm (17-inch) diamond-cut alloy wheels (or steel wheels with covers depending on variant).
At the rear, vertically stacked LED tail lamps with a "double D" pattern, horizontal reflectors, and a side-opening tailgate maintain the classic tough look. Other elements include powered ORVMs with turn indicators and body-coloured or unpainted bumpers by variant.
safety
The Scorpio Classic has no official Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP crash test or star rating available, as it has not been formally tested by these accredited bodies (unlike the Scorpio-N, which scored 5 stars for adult protection in Global NCAP).
In terms of active safety, it includes ABS with EBD (standard across variants), but ESC, hill hold, or ADAS features are not available.
Additionally on the passive side, features comprise dual front airbags (driver and passenger, standard), engine immobilizer, central locking with speed sensing, rear parking sensors, and crash sensors, with no side/curtain airbags or ISOFIX anchors offered.
competition
The Scorpio Classic mainly competes in the SUV space against its better facelift – Scorpio N, along with other SUV lineups such as Force Gurkha and Mahindra Thar.
The Scorpio-N includes revised exterior and interior design, a larger touchscreen infotainment system, more features in higher variants (including some ADAS elements), improved suspension tuning, and options for automatic transmission. The Classic counters with a higher ground clearance (209 mm vs 187 mm on the Scorpio-N), and also features a taller overall height (1995 mm).
The Force Gurkha is a purpose-built off-roader with a standard 4x4 system, locking differentials, and hardware focused on tackling extreme terrain, but it offers basic features and limited on-road comfort. In contrast, the Scorpio Classic is designed for broader usability, with rear-wheel drive, higher seating capacity, and a more practical cabin suited for daily driving and long-distance use, while still retaining a rugged body-on-frame construction.
The Mahindra Thar is more focused on off-road use, offering multiple engine options and 4x4 capability, but its design limits rear-seat space and overall practicality. In comparison, the Scorpio Classic prioritises everyday usability with a larger cabin, higher seating capacity, and a more practical SUV layout.
