Pros & Cons of Mahindra Bolero Neo

Things We Like

  • The only sub-4-metre SUV in India to offer body-on-frame construction with rear-wheel drive and seven seats.
  • The 1493cc diesel engine produces 260 Nm of torque from as low as 1,750 rpm, giving it a meaningful pull advantage over petrol-powered rivals in the same size and price bracket.
  • Engine Stop/Start and ECO mode are standard across all five variants, including the entry-level N4.
  • ISOFIX mounts, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and corner braking control are available across the range, with ISOFIX arriving from the N10 upward.

Things We Don't Like

  • The Global NCAP 2024 test rated it 1 star, with the bodyshell being unstable under frontal loading, with driver's chest protection rated weak.
  • ESC (Electronic Stability Control), now standard on most competitors in this segment, is absent across the entire Bolero Neo range.
  • The third-row seats are side-facing jump seats, practical for occasional short-trip use but unsuitable for long journeys, particularly for adults.

Mahindra Bolero Neo Overview

Updated on March 10, 2026

The Mahindra Bolero Neo is a body-on-frame (a construction where the body sits on a separate rigid chassis frame, lending it durability and off-road capability) rear-wheel-drive SUV that carries forward one of India's most recognized nameplates. At 3,995 mm long with a 2,680 mm wheelbase, it sits between a city-focused compact and a full-sized off-roader.

Under the hood is a mHawk100 diesel engine. This iteration also introduces RideFlo suspension technology and Mahindra's Multi-Terrain Technology for traction management.

The cabin's design is credited to Italian design house Pininfarina. Inside, it offers a 5+2 seating configuration with foldable third-row seats to accommodate extra passengers or cargo, alongside essential safety equipment like dual front airbags and ABS with EBD.

engine and performance

The Mahindra Bolero Neo is powered by a 1.5-litre (1493 cc) mHawk100 BSVI-compliant diesel engine. It produces 100 hp of maximum power at 3750 rpm and 260 Nm of torque accessible early between 1750 and 2250 rpm.

Unlike typical front-wheel-drive crossovers, Neo utilises a traditional high-strength steel body-on-frame chassis and a rear-wheel-drive layout. To handle unpredictable and low-traction surfaces, available variants feature Multi-Terrain Technology (MTT) that intelligently distributes torque to the rear wheels.

Also, ride quality over uneven roads is managed by Mahindra's RideFlo technology and the suspension consists of a double-wishbone front and a multi-link rear setup, both integrated with Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD – a system that adjusts damping based on how fast the suspension moves, helping absorb sharp bumps more effectively) to improve stability, control, and passenger comfort on rough terrains.

fuel economy

The Mahindra Bolero Neo does not have an official ARAI-certified fuel economy reading. However, the mHawk100 engine does feature an Engine Stop/Start (ESS – which cuts the engine at idle and restarts it when you move off) micro-hybrid system and a selectable ECO mode that adjusts throttle response to encourage more economical driving. Both are modest but meaningful contributors to efficiency in city traffic.

Also the fuel tank holds 50 litres and as with any diesel SUV of this type, real-world efficiency will dip noticeably in urban stop-go conditions compared to open highway driving, the low-end torque that makes it capable off-road can encourage heavier throttle use around town.

interior

The Bolero Neo's dashboard was designed by Italian design house Pininfarina. Two cabin themes run across the range, Mocha Brown and Lunar Grey, depending on the variant. Upholstery progresses from vinyl at entry level through fabric to leatherette in the top two variants, with enhanced foam padding across all seats.

Complementing these material choices, all seven seats are arranged in a 5+2 layout, with the third row folding on all variants and the second row folding (variant dependent). Upper variants get a height-adjustable driver's seat, armrests for the front row, and a second-row armrest.

Taking center stage on the aforementioned dashboard, the 22.8 cm touchscreen with rear-view camera is available, paired with four speakers and two tweeters. A USB C-type charging port and 12V point cover connectivity needs.

exterior

Measuring 3995 mm in length, 1795 mm in width, and 1817 mm in height, the Bolero Neo maintains a sub-four-metre footprint with a 2680 mm wheelbase.

Up front, X-shaped body-coloured bumpers feature across all variants, with higher variants adding chrome grille inserts, DRLs, static bending headlamps, and front fog lamps.

Along the sides, cladding is standard across all variants, while wheel arch cladding and dual-tone ORVMs come on select trims.

Wheels range from R15 steel to R16 dark metallic grey alloys depending on the variant, shod with 215/75 R15 tyres on most and 215/70 R16 on the top trim.

Rounding out the profile, a roof spoiler and muscular side footsteps feature on higher variants, and an X-type spare wheel cover sits on the tailgate across all variants.

safety

The Bolero Neo was tested by Global NCAP in 2024, scoring 1 star for adult occupant protection (20.26 out of 34) and 1 star for child occupant protection (12.71 out of 49).

The test flagged the bodyshell as unstable under frontal loading, driver's chest protection as weak, and both driver and passenger knees as marginal due to unstable footwell area.

Adding to these concerns, the side seating benches posed a significant risk for all occupants, due to which Mahindra fell disappointingly short of Global NCAP’s safety expectations with the continued use of this type of seating.

On the active safety front, ESC (Electronic Stability Control) is not fitted as standard, and the seatbelt reminder system did not meet Global NCAP's requirements. Side curtain airbags are absent.

That said, standard safety equipment across all variants includes dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, corner braking control, engine immobilizer, and a speed alert warning, with ISOFIX child seat mounts available on higher variants.

competition

The Bolero Neo has no true like-for-like rivals, as it remains the only body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive, 7-seat SUV in the sub-4-metre category in India. However, buyers shortlisting it typically also consider the following monocoque alternatives:

Skoda Kylaq (launched in January 2025) is offered in petrol-only, so buyers wanting a diesel have no option here. It leads on boot space (446 litres versus Bolero Neo's side-facing third row) and comes with 6 airbags and ESC as standard. The Bolero Neo counters with its body-on-frame construction and seven-seat layout.

Hyundai Venue (2nd gen) (launched November 2025) is a considerably more feature-rich package, having dual 12.3-inch curved screens, Level 2 ADAS, 6 airbags, ESC standard, and a diesel-automatic option. It's a stronger all-round proposition for urban buyers.

Bolero Neo's case rests primarily on its off-road capability, 7-seat layout, and rear-wheel drive.
