Mahindra Vision S Overview

Mahindra showcased the Vision S concept in August 2025 as part of its Freedom_NU global vision, previewing a sub-4m compact SUV on the versatile NU_IQ modular platform. Production version testing is underway, with launch expected in 2027, though some reports suggest late 2026 is possible. This model aims to fill the sub-4m rugged SUV space, potentially replacing or complementing the Bolero Neo with a boxy, upright design for strong road presence. Spy mules reveal premium additions like a panoramic sunroof, diesel automatic transmission, and an upscale cabin, targeting families wanting toughness, space, and modern tech at competitive pricing estimated between Rs 10 to 17 lakh. The NU_IQ platform supports multiple powertrains including ICE, hybrid, and EV, making it future-ready. It is positioned as a mini Defender with Mahindra’s signature capability, focusing on durability for Indian roads while adding comforts missing in current entry SUVs.
engine and performance
The Vision S is based on the NU_IQ platform, which is compatible with multiple powertrains, and spy testing has confirmed a diesel automatic variant. Expected engine options include a 1.5-litre diesel similar to the Thar, producing around 117 PS and 300 Nm, paired with manual or automatic gearboxes. A 1.2-litre turbo-petrol from the XUV 3XO, with about 130 PS and 230 Nm, is also likely for more responsive performance. While the platform supports hybrid and EV options in the future, the initial launch is expected to focus on ICE powertrains, possibly with mild-hybrid tech for better efficiency. The diesel automatic should deliver strong low-end torque and relaxed driving, while the petrol option will suit buyers preferring quicker acceleration. All-wheel drive is unlikely, with a front-wheel-drive setup expected to keep costs in check. Real-world fuel efficiency could cross 18 to 20 kmpl for the diesel, with tuning focused on durability, refinement, and low NVH for Indian conditions.
interior
Spy images of the Vision S interior reveal a premium yet rugged cabin that closely mirrors the concept. It features an upright dashboard with a layered design, a dual-tone navy blue and grey theme, and soft-touch materials for an upscale feel. A large panoramic sunroof stretches to the rear seats, creating an airy cabin ambience. The centre console houses wireless charging, ventilated seat controls, and an electronic parking brake. Dual-tone leatherette seats with contrast stitching offer good support, while three rear headrests and 60:40 split folding enhance flexibility. Expected features include a large touchscreen over 10 inches, a digital instrument cluster in higher trims, connected tech, rear AC vents, and ample storage. The layout looks production-ready, practical, and comfortable, blending toughness with family-friendly premium touches not usually seen in sub-4m rivals.
exterior
The Vision S production model, based on spy shots, retains the concept’s boxy, rugged silhouette with flat panels, an upright stance, and squared-off proportions for a tough, Defender-like appeal in a sub-4m size. The front features a rectangular blacked-out grille with horizontal slats, twin-peak Mahindra logo, and inverted L-shaped LED headlights with vertical DRL strips. Chunky bumpers with skid plates, ice-cube fog lamps, and contrasting cladding underline off-road readiness. The side profile shows straight lines, roof rails, flush door handles likely carried over from the concept, and 16 to 17 inch alloy wheels. At the rear, vertical brake lights on the spare wheel housing, pixel-style LED taillights, and a silver skid plate add to the rugged look. Staying under four metres with high ground clearance, it looks muscular and commanding, blending modern and retro elements with possible dual-tone colour options and full LED lighting.
competition
The Vision S will take on sub-4m compact SUVs such as the Tata Punch and Nexon for their feature set, but with a more rugged design focus. It will also rival the Hyundai Exter and Venue, which offer premium cabins but lean more towards on-road comfort. Mahindra’s own XUV 3XO sits close in terms of technology but lacks the boxy, upright character. Maruti Fronx and Brezza will compete on efficiency and service reach. In spirit, it also aligns with smaller off-road oriented SUVs and potential baby versions of models like the Force Gurkha. With its Defender-inspired styling, panoramic sunroof, and diesel automatic option, the Vision S aims to appeal to buyers seeking a tough-looking yet premium compact SUV, carving out a distinct space among softer crossovers.
