The Mahindra Bolero name has stood for its toughness for over two decades and the Neo sharpens that legacy by packaging a boxy high-strength steel body-on-frame chassis into a compact footprint, a 1.5-litre mHawk diesel engine with 260 Nm of torque to the rear wheels, along with utilizing a frequency-dependent damping suspension tuned to absorb whatever the road throws at it. It offers seven seats, real ground clearance, and more than enough capabilities to own the highway and the hill track alike.

Mahindra Bolero Neo Overview

Updated on March 19, 2026

The Mahindra Bolero Neo is a body-on-frame rear-wheel-drive SUV that carries forward one of India's most recognized nameplates. At 3,995 mm long with a 2,680 mm wheelbase, it sits between a city-focused compact and a full-sized off-roader.

Under the hood is a mHawk100 diesel engine. This iteration also introduces RideFlo suspension technology and Mahindra's Multi-Terrain Technology for traction management in top model only.

The cabin's design is credited to Italian design house Pininfarina, and it offers a 5+2 seating configuration with foldable third-row seats to accommodate extra passengers or cargo, alongside essential safety equipment like dual front airbags and ABS with EBD.

Engine and Performance

The Bolero Neo is equipped with a robust 1.5-litre mHawk100 turbocharged diesel engine, a 3-cylinder unit compliant with BSVI emission norms. It delivers a maximum power output of 98.56 hp at 3750 rpm and peak torque of 260 Nm. Those looking for a turbocharged petrol engine might consider other alternatives for a more spirited drive.

The engine is paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual transmission and features rear-wheel drive (2WD) configuration. This powertrain, shared in lineage with Mahindra's proven mHawk series, provides reliable pulling power for its 7-seater ladder-frame SUV structure, with a fuel tank capacity of 50 litres.

fuel economy

The official ARAI-certified fuel efficiency for the Bolero Neo stands at 17.29 kmpl for the diesel manual variants. This figure is measured under standardized ARAI test conditions, providing a benchmark for laboratory-controlled efficiency and overall range.

Key optimisations to fuel consumption include technologies like ESS (Engine Start-Stop) in select variants and ECO mode.

interior

The Bolero Neo's interior offers a premium aesthetic, thanks to a Pininfarina-designed dashboard that offers it a clean style. The cabin comes in two themes, cozy Mocha Brown or sleek Lunar Grey, depending on the variant.

Anchoring this dashboard on equipped variants is a 9-inch (22.8 cm) touchscreen with a rear-view camera, backed by four speakers and two tweeters. Alongside this, connectivity includes a USB Type-C port and a 12V socket, keeping the front console simple, functional, and family-friendly.

Beyond the dashboard, seating follows a practical 7-seater (5+2) layout featuring enhanced foam padding for comfort. Upholstery steps up from vinyl on base models to fabric in mid variants, and premium leatherette on the top two. To maximize this interior space, the third row folds flat across all variants, while higher ones add a folding second row, a height-adjustable driver seat, and armrests for the front and second row.

exterior

The Bolero Neo is defined by it's 3995 mm length, 1795 mm width, standing tall at 1817 mm, and backed by a generous 2680 mm wheelbase that helps make the most of the interior space.

Up front, every variant sports striking X-shaped body-coloured bumpers for a sturdy presence. Step up to the higher variants, and the fascia gains chrome grille accents, daytime running lights (DRLs), static bending headlamps, and front fog lamps designed to enhance visibility in poor conditions.

Moving to the sides, black cladding runs standard across the range to protect against scratches and maintain a tough SUV stance. Higher variants build on this by adding wheel arch cladding for extra muscle, dual-tone outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs), and beefy side footsteps that improve cabin accessibility. Complementing this profile, wheel choices range from 15-inch steel rims with 215/75 R15 tyres to 16-inch dark metallic grey alloys wearing lower-profile 215/70 R16 rubber for more road presence.

To finish off the look, higher variants feature a neat roof spoiler, while at the rear, every variant rocks the signature X-type spare wheel cover on the tailgate, tying the whole exterior toughness design together.

safety

The Bolero Neo was tested by Global NCAP in 2024, scoring 1 star for both adult and child occupant protection, scoring 20.26 out of 34, and 12.71 out of 49 respectively. The test flagged the bodyshell as unstable under frontal loading, driver's chest protection as weak, and both driver and passenger knees as marginal due to unstable footwell area.

Adding to these concerns, the side seating benches posed a significant risk for all occupants, due to which Mahindra fell disappointingly short of Global NCAP’s safety expectations with the continued use of this type of seating. On the active safety front, ESC (Electronic Stability Control) is not fitted as standard, and the seatbelt reminder system did not meet Global NCAP's requirements. Side curtain airbags are absent.

That said, standard safety equipment across all variants includes dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, corner braking control, engine immobilizer, and a speed alert warning, with ISOFIX child seat mounts available on higher variants.

competition

The Bolero Neo has no true like-for-like rivals, as it remains the only body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive, 7-seat SUV in the sub-4-metre category in India. However, buyers shortlisting it typically also consider the following monocoque alternatives:

Skoda Kylaq is offered in petrol-only, so buyers wanting a diesel have no option here. It leads on boot space (446 litres versus Bolero Neo's side-facing third row) and comes with 6 airbags and ESC as standard. The Bolero Neo counters with its body-on-frame construction and seven-seat layout.

Hyundai Venue (2nd gen) is a considerably more feature-rich package, having dual 12.3-inch curved screens, Level 2 ADAS, 6 airbags, ESC standard, and a diesel-automatic option. It's a stronger all-round proposition for urban buyers.

Bolero Neo's case rests primarily on its off-road capability, 7-seat layout, and rear-wheel drive.
