Toyota Rumion Overview

Updated on April 7, 2026

The Toyota Rumion is a rebadged and lightly restyled version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, sharing its platform, dimensions, and core mechanicals. Its design follows a MPV layout with a length of 4460 mm, width of 1735 mm, height of 1690 mm, and a 2740 mm wheelbase, with a ground clearance of 185 mm. This setup delivers a roomy cabin while keeping the footprint manageable for urban parking and tight roads.

It uses a 1.5-litre K-series four-cylinder petrol engine producing 103 hp and about 139 Nm of torque, pairing with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. A CNG variant is also available with a 5-speed manual transmission, with slightly lower power output when running on CNG.

Inside, key features include a 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, and cruise control. The third row folds to expand luggage space from 209 litres. Meanwhile, exterior styling includes simple lines, halogen projector headlamps, and 15-inch wheels.

Safety features include six airbags as standard, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill hold assist, ISOFIX child-seat mounts, and a reversing camera.

Engine and Performance

The Rumion uses a single 1.5-litre 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated K-series petrol engine. In petrol form, it produces 103 hp at 6000 rpm and 139 Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic.

The CNG variant runs on the same displacement engine but with dedicated tuning, delivering 88 hp at 5500 rpm and 121.5 Nm, available only with the 5-speed manual.

Both versions use a front-wheel-drive layout, with the petrol automatic including paddle shifters in higher trims for manual control. No diesel option is available.

fuel economy

The Rumion offers ARAI-certified fuel economy of 20.51 km/l with the petrol manual and 20.11 km/l with the petrol automatic. The CNG manual variant delivers a higher efficiency figure of 26.11 km/kg.

As for fuel storage, petrol variants use a 45-litre fuel tank, while the CNG version comes with a 60-litre water-equivalent tank.

interior

The Rumion’s cabin dashboard is layered with dual-tone elements and soft-touch surfaces on higher trims for a clean, family-friendly layout. Physical controls sit close to the 7-inch touchscreen, covering wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and Toyota i-Connect features.

For the driver, the three-spoke steering wheel adds tilt adjustability and on equipped variants, mounted controls for audio and cruise. Ahead, the instrument cluster blends analogue and digital elements to display speed, fuel economy, trip data, and warning alerts without clutter.

Seating comes finished in cloth upholstery, with the driver benefiting from height adjustment and second-row passengers getting sliding and reclining functions to dial in their comfort. Meanwhile further back, rear passengers get dedicated AC vents with three blower settings, power windows, and cup holders.

Lastly, storage is well spread across the cabin through the glovebox, door pockets, and seatback pockets, while boot capacity starts at 209 litres with all seats up and opens up once the third row is folded away.

exterior

The overall exterior design of the Rumion maintains clean lines to emphasize aerodynamics and outward visibility.

At the front, the Rumion’s grille gets the Toyota badging, surrounded by fog lamps and halogen headlamps (upgrades to projector units in some variants). Below this, the bumper integrates air intakes and black cladding to maintain a functional appearance.

On the side, the profile is defined by long doors for easy access to all rows, visually supported by blacked-out B-pillars, body-coloured door handles, and matching mirrors. Higher trims also incorporate roof rails for added utility.

At the rear, the vehicle utilises a horizontal tail lamp layout with integrated reflectors, paired with a bumper and a high-mounted stop lamp.

Supporting this frame are 15-inch steel or alloy wheels wrapped in 185/65 R15 tyres, with a ground clearance of 185 mm to accommodate mildly uneven surfaces.

safety

The Rumion is equipped with six airbags across all variants, including ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and hill hold assist. For everyday security and passenger safety, the vehicle is fitted with ISOFIX child-seat anchors, seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters, a rear parking camera, and speed-sensing door locks. Notably, the ADAS suite is not available on this model.

Regarding structural safety and crash test performance, the Rumion shares its underlying platform with the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. This shared platform holds a 3-star Global NCAP rating for both adult and child occupant protection, scoring 9.25 out of 17.00 for adults and 25.16 out of 49.00 for children.

While the bodyshell integrity was rated as unstable during this evaluation, it is important to note that these figures are based on a 2019 test conducted on an Ertiga equipped with only two airbags, rather than the six currently offered on the Rumion.

competition

The Rumion closely competes with the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Kia Carens in its segment.

The Ertiga shares the identical powertrain, dimensions, and cabin layout, giving it an edge in lower entry pricing and broader dealer network density. The Rumion counters with Toyota's branding, potentially longer standard warranty coverage, and perceived higher resale value.

The Carens offers a slight advantage in boot space (216 litres vs 209 litres) and a more powerful 1.5-litre petrol engine (113 bhp vs 102 bhp), plus a modern, premium interior feel in higher trims. The Rumion holds its own through superior CNG efficiency (26.11 km/kg), and standard six-airbag setup.
