Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

4.5

Overall Rating

Rate & Earn ₹1000/-
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder does something unusual for the midsize SUV segment, it brings a genuine self-charging strong-hybrid powertrain to a space where most rivals run on pure petrol. With three powertrain choices, including a factory-fitted CNG option and an available AWD configuration, it covers more buyer scenarios than almost anything at this size. For those who weigh running costs as heavily as features, the Hyryder makes a quietly compelling case.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Overview

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder measures 4365 mm in length on a 2600 mm wheelbase, sharing its platform with the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, though both cars carry distinct bodies, interiors, and powertrains.

Toyota's key differentiator here is its proprietary strong-hybrid system, a technology the brand has deployed globally for decades. The hybrid version combines a 1.5L petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 114 hp, paired with an e-Drive transmission delivering a class-leading 27.97 km/l.

Beyond efficiency, the vehicle is positioned as a feature-rich contender designed for the modern driver. Its bold exterior presence is matched by a sophisticated interior that integrates high-end comforts and advanced safety systems, creating a well-rounded package that appeals to both tech-savvy buyers and efficiency-conscious commuters.

Engine and Performance

The Hyryder is offered with three powertrain choices catering to different priorities. The NeoDrive variant uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 102 hp and 136.8 Nm, supported by a mild-hybrid assist system that helps improve efficiency and low-speed response. Power is sent to the wheels through either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

For buyers seeking lower running costs, the lineup also includes a factory-fitted CNG variant based on the same 1.5-litre engine. It produces 99 hp and 136 Nm when running on petrol, while outputs drop to 87 hp and 121.5 Nm on CNG. This variant is available only with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

At the top of the range is the strong-hybrid powertrain, which combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver a combined output of 114 hp. This setup drives the front wheels through Toyota’s e-Drive transmission and focuses on delivering smooth performance and improved fuel efficiency, particularly in city driving.

fuel economy

Efficiency figures vary noticeably by powertrain, led by the strong-hybrid’s ARAI-certified 27.97 km/l figure. The E-CNG variant follows with a rating of 26.6 km/kg in CNG mode, though a separate petrol-mode efficiency figure for this model is not specified.

For the NeoDrive petrol, efficiency depends on the specific drivetrain and transmission – the 5-speed manual (2WD) returns 21.12 km/l, while the 6-speed automatic (2WD) returns 20.58 km/l. The 5-speed manual (AWD) yields a lower 19.39 km/l, as the heavier all-wheel-drive hardware accounts for the difference.

Supporting these efficiency ratings is a standard 45-litre fuel tank across all variants. To accommodate its bi-fuel capability, the E-CNG model additionally carries a 55-litre (water equivalent) CNG cylinder.

interior

The Hyryder's cabin features a soft-touch instrument panel with premium stitching on higher variants and perforated artificial leather seats. This setup is anchored by an infotainment system that scales from a 7-inch touchscreen to a 9-inch unit, depending on the variant, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Hey Siri, and Hello Google compatibility. Similarly, the TFT colour instrument cluster grows from 4.2 inches to 7 inches across the range.

On top variants, the interior adds wireless charging, ventilated front seats, an 8-way power-adjustable driver seat, and a panoramic sunroof, while a head-up display is fitted to the top Hybrid model. To maintain air quality, a PM2.5 cabin filter with an AQI display is included as standard.

Practicality extends to the rear bench, which reclines, splits 60/40, and includes a centre armrest with cupholders. General storage and utility are rounded out by a front sliding armrest, dual accessory sockets, and rear Type-C USB ports.

exterior

The Hyryder measures 4365 mm long, 1795 mm wide, and 1645 mm tall on a 2600 mm wheelbase, with a dual-tone exterior finish available as an option on select variants. At the front, its SUV character comes through a silver skid plate and twin LED DRLs that double as side turn indicators. From the high variant upward, forward lighting is fully LED across the headlamps, DRLs, and position lamps, while the base variant uses bi-halogen projectors.

Moving to the side profile, the vehicle is grounded by black wheel arch cladding, side under-protection garnish, and 215/60 R17 wheels, offered as steel with wheel caps or machined alloys depending on the variant. The side view is further accented by black roof rails on most models and a chrome beltline garnish fitted on select higher variants.

At the rear, the exterior is completed by a roof end spoiler and a matching rear silver skid plate. The fully LED lighting setup from the higher variants also extends to the tail lamps, unifying the overall design.

safety

The Hyryder is built on Toyota’s TECT (Total Effective Control Technology) body structure, with side impact protection beams to enhance occupant safety. Standard equipment covers all the modern essentials, including dual front airbags, Vehicle Stability Control, and Hill Hold Control, alongside standard ISOFIX child seat anchors.

Moving up the trim ladder introduces a more comprehensive safety net, expanding the airbag count to six and adding a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Additionally, the AWD NeoDrive variant benefits from Hill Descent Control, while the top-spec models gain a Surround View Monitor for 360-degree visibility.

It is worth noting, however, that as of March 2026, the Hyryder has not yet been officially crash-tested and rated by either Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP.

competition

The closest rivals to the Urban Cruiser Hyryder by Toyota are the new Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and Honda Elevate.

The Seltos is built on a new K3 platform and is longer and wider than the Hyryder. It comes with dual 12.3-inch displays, a Bose sound system, and Level 2 ADAS, none of which the Hyryder offers. The Hyryder counters with a genuine strong-hybrid and a factory CNG option, which the Seltos doesn't have yet.

The Creta remains the segment's bestseller and uniquely offers a diesel engine alongside a 1.5L turbo-petrol, powertrains the Hyryder doesn't touch. The Hyryder's strong hybrid leads on fuel economy, though.

The Elevate offers more boot space than the Hyryder. The Hyryder answers with three powertrain choices, hybrid, mild hybrid (NeoDrive), and CNG, compared to the Elevate's single petrol option.
