Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Overview

Updated July 7, 2026

The Grand Vitara, sold exclusively through NEXA, the brand's premium retail network is built on Suzuki's TECT platform, and is offered with two distinct powertrains: a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre Strong Hybrid.

The hybrid can run on battery power alone and operates in a zero-emissions mode, without any plug-in charging required.

Select variants carry the ALLGRIP Select 4x4 system with four driver-selectable terrain modes.

Inside, the cabin spans features from a panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats to a head-up display and a connected car system with over 40 remote functions, offered across a wide variant spread.

We've also compared the Grand Vitara with the Victoris, to help you decide what's best for you.

Engine and Performance

The Grand Vitara offers two powertrains. The petrol is a 1.5-litre unit making 101 hp and 139 Nm, available with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.

The more capable option is the 1.5-litre Strong Hybrid. The petrol engine alone makes 91 hp, but paired with an electric motor, the combined system output rises to 114 hp. It delivers 141 Nm and runs on an e-CVT.

Drive wise, the ALLGRIP Select 4WD is available on the petrol AT, and also adds Auto, Sport, Snow, and Lock modes via a push-and-turn dial.

fuel economy

Official ARAI-certified figures for the Grand Vitara are 21.11 km/l for the petrol manual, 20.58 km/l for the petrol automatic, and 19.20 km/l for the ALLGRIP 4WD automatic.

The Strong Hybrid leads the range at 27.97 km/l,  which translates to a claimed range of over 1,200 km on the 45-litre tank under Maruti Suzuki's internal testing conditions.

Maruti Suzuki also claims the Grand Vitara is India's most fuel-efficient SUV in its category, a claim supported by independent research agency JATO Dynamics (dated back to July 2022).

interior

The Grand Vitara offers a premium cabin with all-black or dual-tone black & Bordeaux interiors. Higher variants add leatherette upholstery, a soft-touch dashboard, and ambient lighting.

It features a 17.78 cm (7-inch) or 22.86 cm (9-inch) SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen (with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay on higher trims), a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display, wireless charging, and a panoramic sunroof.

Comfort features include ventilated front seats and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Rear passengers get reclining 60:40 split-folding seats, rear AC vents, and a centre armrest with cup holders.

Select variants also offer rear door sunshades and an Auto Purify system with PM2.5 display.

Boot Space: 373 litres (expandable with 60:40 split rear seats). However, hybrid variants offer slightly less due to battery placement.

exterior

The Grand Vitara measures 4345 mm in length, 1795 mm in width, and 1645 mm in height. At the front, it features a large grille, LED daytime running lamps, and projector headlamps.

Base variants get bi-halogen projector headlamps, while higher trims come with LED headlamps with auto function and follow-me-home feature.

Along the sides, the SUV rides on 215/60 R17 tyres, with machined alloy wheels available on select variants.

Roof rails, dual-tone exterior paint options, and ORVM-mounted turn indicators are offered across the range, while higher variants add auto-folding ORVMs.

At the rear, it gets LED tail lamps connected by a full-width light element, along with a roof spoiler and skid plates.

safety

The Grand Vitara is built on Suzuki's TECT platform and comes with six airbags as standard across all variants.

Safety features include ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and Hill Hold Assist. The ALLGRIP variant also gets Hill Descent Control.

Other safety equipment includes ISOFIX child seat anchors, 3-point seat belts with reminders for all seats, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) from the Delta variant onwards.

The Sigma variant comes with rear parking sensors, while a reverse parking camera is available from the Delta variant onwards. Higher variants also get a 360-degree camera.

The Strong Hybrid variant includes an Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) for pedestrian safety during electric driving.

Note that the Grand Vitara has not been tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP yet, so no official independent rating is available.

competition

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara competes closely with the Kia Seltos, Maruti Victoris, and Hyundai Creta.

The Seltos offers turbo-petrol and diesel engines along with Level 2 ADAS, while the Grand Vitara stands out with its strong-hybrid powertrain and ALLGRIP 4WD option.

The Victoris shares the Grand Vitara's platform and powertrains but adds Level 2 ADAS and a CNG variant with an underbody tank for better boot space. The Grand Vitara, meanwhile, benefits from its NEXA positioning and established hybrid offering.

The Creta offers a more comprehensive safety suite, while the Grand Vitara counters with lower running costs through its strong-hybrid powertrain and the option of all-wheel drive.
