Suzuki Developing Low-Cost ADAS Technology for India, Targets Affordable Maruti Suzuki Cars

Quick Read - Suzuki is developing low-cost ADAS for India, with camera-based technology aimed at making automatic emergency braking and lane departure prevention standard across its future range. Launch details remain unconfirmed.

Suzuki Motor Corporation is developing a lower-cost Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) for India, with plans to extend essential safety features across its future vehicle range, including more affordable cars. The initiative was outlined during the company's Technology Strategy 2026 briefing on September 25, 2026, as Suzuki looks to make accident-prevention technology more accessible to mass-market buyers.

Suzuki Aims to Make Essential ADAS Features Standard

Suzuki's strategy focuses on making core driver assistance features available across a wider range of vehicles rather than restricting them to premium models. Chief Technology Officer Katsuhiro Kato explained that installing expensive safety technology in only a limited number of luxury cars would not help reduce accidents across society.

Under its proposed 'just-right ADAS' approach, Suzuki intends to make essential functions, including automatic emergency braking and lane departure prevention, standard across its future model range. More advanced comfort and convenience features could remain reserved for higher variants.

High-Resolution Cameras and AI Chips to Reduce Costs

One of the key aspects of Suzuki's development programme is reducing the hardware cost associated with ADAS. The company plans to use high-resolution cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) chips to process information about the vehicle's surroundings.

Suzuki is also exploring a setup that eliminates the need for a front radar sensor. The objective is to achieve significant cost reductions while maintaining comparable or better safety performance. Driver and occupant monitoring functions are also being considered for integration into the system.

However, these are development targets. Suzuki has not released production-system performance data or confirmed that the proposed camera-based setup is ready for commercial use.

Why Suzuki Is Developing ADAS Specifically for India

Indian roads present challenges that can complicate the operation of driver assistance systems, including unpredictable traffic movements, motorcycles entering a vehicle's path and inconsistent lane markings. Suzuki wants to develop a system suited to local driving conditions instead of simply adapting technology designed for other markets.

The focus is particularly relevant given that India recorded 177,177 road accident deaths in 2024. Wider access to collision-prevention technology could help reduce some risks, although ADAS cannot eliminate accidents or replace attentive driving.

Will Upcoming Maruti Suzuki Cars Get the New ADAS System?

Maruti Suzuki has already introduced Level 2 ADAS in the updated Baleno launched in September 2026. That system uses a radar-and-camera combination and includes features such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and forward collision warning.

The newly proposed, lower-cost camera-based technology is a separate development effort. Suzuki has not confirmed which models will receive it first, whether it will reach entry-level cars such as the Alto, or when production could begin.

What This Means for Buyers

Suzuki's plan could help bring advanced safety functions to a broader section of India's car market by reducing the cost of the underlying technology. However, buyers should not assume that every upcoming Maruti Suzuki model will receive ADAS as standard immediately. The company has yet to announce a rollout schedule, specific models or pricing details for the new system.
