Renault Duster E-Tech 160 Hybrid Explained
Quick Read - The Renault Duster strong hybrid delivers 160 PS and claims 29 kmpl, compared with the Grand Vitara hybrid's 116 PS and 27.97 kmpl. It also gets a larger 1.4 kWh battery and more boot space.

Renault launches the Duster strong hybrid on 17 October 2026, and bookings are already open at Rs 21,000. For anyone sitting on a Grand Vitara hybrid booking, this is the question: the Maruti has been on sale for four years with a proven hybrid system and a service network behind it, while the Duster arrives with more power, a bigger battery, a higher claimed mileage and a boot the Maruti cannot match.

Here is what the Renault system actually does, and where it lands against the Grand Vitara.

The four parts of the E-Tech system

Petrol engine: a 1,789cc four-cylinder naturally aspirated unit making 109 PS. It is the HR18, built by Horse Powertrain, the engine company Renault owns jointly with Geely.

Drive motor: 49 PS, and this is the one connected to the front wheels.

Starter generator: 20 PS, and this one never drives the wheels. It starts the engine and makes electricity.

Battery: 1.4 kWh lithium-ion, charged by the car itself.

Together the system is rated at 160 PS and 172 Nm.

Why 109 plus 49 does not equal the headline number

A hybrid's combined figure is never a simple addition. The petrol engine hits its peak power at high revs and the electric motor hits its peak at low revs, so both never arrive at the same moment. The 20 PS generator sits outside the sum completely because it feeds the battery instead of the wheels.

Renault rates the whole system at 160 PS once the control unit blends what the engine and the drive motor can deliver together.

How Renault Hybrid work on the road

New Renault Duster Strong Hybrid E‑Tech 160 Engine

The Duster hybrid charges itself, so there is no plug and no charging stop. Every drive begins on the electric motor, which is why the first few seconds are silent. As speed and load build, the petrol engine joins in. When the battery runs low or the engine is already running in an efficient zone, the 20 PS generator takes power off the engine and refills the pack. Because that generator can restart the engine instantly, the engine is free to switch off completely at low loads instead of idling.

Lift off the accelerator or brake, and the drive motor runs backwards as a generator, sending that energy back into the battery instead of turning it into brake heat. Renault states that 80 percent of city driving time can happen in electric mode.

The gearbox is where Renault differs from Toyota

Power reaches the wheels through a multi-mode automatic with fixed gear ratios and no clutch. The gearbox selects between three states on its own: electric only, electric plus petrol, and petrol led.

Toyota's system, which the Grand Vitara uses, has no fixed gears at all. It sends engine and motor power through a power split device and an e-CVT, so engine speed and road speed are decoupled.

Under hard acceleration the Renault steps through ratios and engine revs rise and fall, while the e-CVT holds the engine at a steady high rev point until you back off.

Expected Real World Mileage

The Renault Duster hybrid has an ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of 29 kmpl, compared with 27.97 kmpl for the Grand Vitara strong hybrid and 28.65 kmpl for the Victoris hybrid. Since hybrid systems generally deliver their best mileage in city traffic, we can expect the Duster hybrid to return around 24 kmpl in urban conditions and between 18 and 20 kmpl during highway testing, provided the battery maintains a healthy charge.

Once the battery charge drops, fuel efficiency could fall to around 10 to 12 kmpl, considering the engine's relatively large 1.6-litre displacement. However, this is an extreme scenario, as completely depleting a battery of this size during normal driving is difficult, and any such drop in efficiency would likely be temporary.

Duster Strong Hybrid vs Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid

The Grand Vitara runs Toyota's system: a 1.5-litre three-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine making 92 PS and 122 Nm, an 80 PS electric motor with 141 Nm, a combined 116 PS, a 0.76 kWh battery and an e-CVT, for an ARAI rated 27.97 kmpl.

So the Duster brings 44 PS more, almost twice the battery and a higher mileage claim, and it keeps a 518 litre boot where the Grand Vitara's battery pushes hybrid boot space down to 265 litres.

FAQs

Do I need to plug the Duster hybrid in?

No. The battery charges from the petrol engine and from braking while you drive. Your only stop is the fuel pump.

How much boot space does the hybrid have?

The Duster range is rated at 518 litres to the parcel shelf and 700 litres to the roof. Renault has not published a separate boot figure for the hybrid variant, which is the number to confirm at the showroom, because the Grand Vitara loses 108 litres in strong hybrid form.

Is this the same as a 48V mild hybrid?

No. A mild hybrid only assists the petrol engine and can never move the car on its own. The Duster E-Tech is a strong hybrid, so it drives on electricity alone with the petrol engine switched off.

How long does the battery last, and what is the warranty?

Renault has not published battery warranty terms for India. For reference, Maruti covers the Grand Vitara's hybrid battery for eight years or 1.6 lakh km. Ask for the Duster's figure in writing before booking.

What will servicing cost?

Renault has not released service costs or intervals for the hybrid. Strong hybrids need less brake work because regenerative braking does much of the slowing, and the engine runs for fewer hours in city use, but the high voltage system needs a trained workshop, so check that your nearest Renault dealer is hybrid certified.

Will it drive through waterlogged roads safely?

The high voltage system is sealed and isolated, and it cuts power automatically if it detects a fault. Ground clearance is 212 mm, which is among the highest in the segment, so wading depth is governed by the engine air intake, not the battery.

Is all-wheel drive available?

No. The new Duster is front-wheel drive across the range, including the hybrid.

Should I buy the hybrid or the 1.3 turbo-petrol?

The 1.3 turbo makes 163 PS and 280 Nm, so it is the quicker car on the highway and will cost less. The hybrid wins in traffic, where it can run on electricity most of the time and claims 29 kmpl. High monthly city running favours the hybrid; mostly highway running favours the turbo.

When are prices out?

On 17 October 2026, along with the variant lineup. Bookings are open now at Rs 21,000.
