Maruti Suzuki FRONX Overview

Updated on March 11, 2026

Introduced under Maruti Suzuki's premium NEXA umbrella, the Fronx is a sporty compact SUV characterized by a progressive roofline, NEXTre' LED DRLs, and a NEXWave grille.

It is one of the few SUVs which comes with a turbo engine under 10 lakhs. The engine choices with Fronx include 1.2L K-Series engine, a 1.0L Turbo Boosterjet making 100 PS and 147.6 Nm, or an S-CNG option. Transmission pairings vary from a manual and Auto Gear Shift (AGS) to a 6-speed automatic equipped with paddle shifters. Fuel economy reaches up to 22.89 km/l for petrol models and 28.51 km/kg for the CNG alternative.

Inside, the dual-tone cabin features a 22.86 cm SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system tuned by Arkamys. Additional interior conveniences include wireless charging, in-built Suzuki Connect, and rear AC vents. Safety specs include high-tensile steel HEARTECT architecture, featuring standard Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Hill-Hold Assist, and up to six airbags. The Fronx is offered across Sigma, Delta, Delta+, Zeta and Alpha variants.

engine and performance

The Fronx is offered with three powertrain options, giving buyers a fair range to choose from. The base 1.2-litre K-Series Dual Jet, Dual VVT petrol produces 89.73 PS at 6000 rpm and 113 Nm at 4400 rpm, and is paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. It's a known, well-sorted engine in Maruti's lineup, not exciting, but dependable and smooth in everyday use. The same 1.2-litre unit is also available in S-CNG trim, where power drops to 77.5 PS and torque to 98.5 Nm, with only a 5-speed manual on offer.

The one to have, though, is the 1.0-litre Turbo Boosterjet. With 100 PS at 5500 rpm and a strong 147.6 Nm arriving early at 2000 rpm, it's noticeably more responsive than the 1.2-litre, and the 0–60 kmph time of 5.3 seconds backs that up. The 6-speed torque converter automatic with paddle shifters makes it the most engaging combination in the range.

fuel economy

The 1.2-litre petrol returns an ARAI-rated 21.79 km/l with the manual and a slightly better 22.89 km/l with the AMT, the AMT's ability to shift at more optimal points, likely accounting for that small gain. The S-CNG variant, running on compressed natural gas, returns 28.51 km/kg.

The 1.0-litre Turbo Boosterjet, despite being the most powerful option, holds its own at 21.5 km/l on the manual and 20.01 km/l on the 6-speed automatic, figures that are respectable for a turbocharged engine.

As with any ARAI figure, real-world returns will be lower depending on traffic conditions, driving style, and AC usage. City driving, especially with frequent stop-and-go, will bring these numbers down noticeably. The turbo manual arguably offers the best balance of performance and efficiency across the range.

interior

Inside, the cabin presents a dual-tone plush theme highlighted by a special forged metal finish across the dashboard. The layout feels sensibly organized, connecting the infotainment screen and the flat-bottom steering wheel intuitively.

Occupants sit on premium fabric seats, with the driver getting a height adjustment and a sliding armrest with storage to find a comfortable driving position. The steering column also adjusts for both tilt and telescopic reach. Rear passengers have adjustable headrests, dedicated AC vents, and fast-charging Type A and Type C USB ports.

The technology interface varies across the lineup, peaking with a 22.86 cm (9-inch) SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen that offers an HD display along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Audio is handled by a 6-speaker setup (four speakers and two tweeters) featuring Surround Sense powered by Arkamys. For the driver, a Head-Up Display and a 360 View Camera bring modern visibility right to the line of sight. Additional perks include wireless smartphone charger and cruise control.

When it comes to carrying luggage, the Fronx offers a standard boot capacity of 308 litres. If more cargo room is needed, the rear bench features a 60:40 split-folding mechanism.

exterior

The Fronx has a genuinely distinctive look for a compact SUV. The NEXWave grille dominates the front with a bold geometric pattern and chrome finish, flanked by NEXTre' Crystal Block LED DRLs. Headlamps vary by variant, with halogen projectors on the Sigma and Delta, LED multi-reflectors with auto headlamps from Delta+ upward.

It measures 3995 mm long with a 2520 mm wheelbase and 308 litres of luggage space.

At the rear, the full LED connected RCL is present across all variants, but the illuminated centre strip connecting both clusters is exclusive to the Zeta and Alpha and it's a noticeable visual step up.

The precision-cut alloy wheels are similarly reserved for the Alpha, while lower variants get painted alloys or steel wheels. All variants use 195/60 R16 tyres.

Functional bits include front and rear skid plates, body cladding, a roof spoiler, and a rear wiper available from Zeta upward.

safety

The Fronx's safety foundation is the Suzuki HEARTECT platform, built with high and ultra-high tensile steel for improved structural rigidity and it shows in the body structure's ability to better absorb crash energy.

Six airbags (dual front, side, and curtain) come standard across all variants. ESP (Electronic Stability Program, which helps prevent skidding during sudden manoeuvres), hill-hold assist, ABS with EBD, seat belt pre-tensioners with force limiters, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and 3-point ELR seat belts for all occupants round out the standard kit.

In terms of crash testing, the Fronx has not yet been rated by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP, though an export-spec version tested by ANCAP received a 1-star rating, highlighting mixed results in occupant protection.

competition

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx competes in a heavily contested segment against traditional sub-four-metre SUVs like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet.

The Nexon excels with proven top-tier crash-test safety and multiple powertrain choices. The Venue and Sonet often outshine the Fronx with superior interior plastics and a wider array of tech features. However, the Fronx counters with a distinctive coupe-like silhouette, highly frugal mild-hybrid engine options, and an agile, hatchback-like driving feel.

While rivals offer traditional upright SUV proportions, the Fronx is geared towards buyers seeking standout styling paired with low running costs.
