1. What is GST 2.0 and how does it impact cars in India?
GST 2.0 is the revised Goods and Services Tax structure introduced by the Government of India in September 2025. Under this reform, the tax on small cars and motorcycles up to 350cc has been reduced from 28 percent to 18 percent. Larger vehicles such as SUVs, sedans, and premium cars now fall under a simplified flat 40 percent GST rate, with the previous cess removed.
This change lowers the overall tax burden, leading to immediate reductions in ex-showroom prices across multiple segments.
2. From when are the GST 2.0 price cuts effective?
The revised GST rates officially take effect on September 22, 2025. Some automakers like Mahindra and Renault began applying reduced prices immediately, while others such as Tata Motors and Toyota will make them effective from the implementation date.
Buyers planning festive season purchases can expect all major showrooms to reflect the updated prices by late September 2025.
3. Should I buy a car now or wait further after GST 2.0?
If you are considering a new purchase, this is one of the best times. Prices are already revised downward by most automakers, and further cuts are expected from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Kia soon. If your preferred model is from these brands, waiting a few weeks may help you get the revised ex-showroom price.
Otherwise, booking now ensures timely delivery during the festive season rush when demand is expected to surge.
4. Does GST 2.0 also apply to electric vehicles (EVs)?
EVs continue to enjoy a separate tax structure under GST. The standard 5 percent GST rate for electric cars and scooters remains unchanged. This means GST 2.0 primarily impacts petrol, diesel, and hybrid cars, while EV pricing remains stable.
5. Will used car prices also go down after GST 2.0?
Indirectly, yes. While GST 2.0 applies to new vehicles, the drop in new car prices can put downward pressure on the used car market. Buyers may negotiate harder knowing new vehicles are cheaper, which could soften used car valuations in the short term.
