Updated July 10, 2026

The Land Rover Defender returned in 2019 as a modern reinterpretation of the iconic off-roader, retaining its signature boxy design while adopting contemporary technology and comfort.

In India, it is available in three body styles: the three-door 90, the five-door 110, and the extended 130, which seats up to eight passengers. The 110 is the most popular variant.

Its rugged exterior features clean slab-sided surfaces, pronounced wheel arches, exposed fasteners, and a side-hinged tailgate. Inside, the cabin combines an industrial-inspired design with premium materials and modern technology.

The Defender is offered with a range of petrol and diesel engines, including mild-hybrid options and the high-performance OCTA V8.

It has also earned a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, while extensive trim, colour, and accessory options allow buyers to customise it for both luxury and serious off-road use.

A new Vertex specification, sitting alongside X, is the latest addition to the global lineup, with its India arrival expected to follow.

Engine and Performance

The Defender's diesel lineup features the D350, a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine that delivers 258 kW (350 PS) and 700 Nm of torque.

For those who prefer petrol, there are three standard 3.0-litre options. The P300 six-cylinder produces 221 kW and 470 Nm. The P400 adds mild-hybrid technology to the six-cylinder, pushing the output to 294 kW and 550 Nm, while the P425 produces 309 kW.

At the top of the performance range, the Defender OCTA (P635) utilizes a twin-turbocharged and supercharged 4.4-litre V8 mild-hybrid, generating an impressive 467 kW and 750 Nm.

Regardless of the engine choice, all variants come standard with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, all-wheel drive (AWD), and a twin-speed transfer case featuring both high and low ranges.

fuel economy

Official ARAI-certified fuel economy figures for India vary depending on the choice of powertrain. The D350 diesel is the most efficient option, returning approximately 12-13 kmpl.

For the standard petrol models, the six-cylinder P300 petrol achieves around 9-10 kmpl, while the mild-hybrid P400 petrol returns approximately 8-9 kmpl.

Predictably, the high-performance variants: V8 P525 and the flagship OCTA P635 return roughly 6-8 kmpl based on the available ARAI data.

interior

The Defender's cabin blends rugged styling with modern technology. The dashboard has a clean, driver-focused layout, centred around a 33.27 cm (13.1-inch) Pivi Pro touchscreen that controls most vehicle functions.

Behind the steering wheel is a 31.24 cm (12.3-inch) digital driver display, while a head-up display is available on higher variants.

Comfort and convenience improve as you move up the range. Higher trims offer 14-way electrically adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, while the Defender X adds a ClearSight camera-based rear-view mirror that maintains rear visibility even when the boot is fully loaded.

Depending on the variant, buyers also get a Meridian audio system, wireless charging, configurable ambient lighting, keyless entry, and a 240V power socket.

The Defender is available with up to seven seats, while a six-seat Captain Chair configuration has also been introduced globally for the 110.

Higher variants additionally offer three-zone climate control with Cabin Air Purification Plus, featuring PM2.5 filtration, CO2 management, and an air quality sensor.

The 110 also provides up to 2,277 litres of luggage space with the rear seats folded.

exterior

The Defender retains the upright, boxy silhouette that has defined the nameplate for decades, while incorporating modern styling elements.

At the front, it features a flat, near-vertical bonnet, an upright grille, and standard LED headlights with distinctive daytime running lights.

The sides are characterised by clean, slab-sided surfaces, pronounced wheel arches, and protective black body cladding that reinforces its rugged appearance.

A signature Defender design element is the Alpine light windows above the rear side windows, which bring additional light into the cabin without disrupting the straight shoulder line.

At the rear, the side-hinged tailgate carries the externally mounted spare wheel on most variants, while darkened LED tail lights and exposed rear recovery points further emphasise the Defender's off-road character.

The high-performance Defender OCTA stands apart with a wider stance, increased ride height, a redesigned front bumper with larger cooling openings, and additional underbody protection.

Depending on the variant, the Defender rides on 20- to 22-inch alloy wheels with different designs and finishes.

safety

The Defender has earned a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, scoring 85% for both adult and child occupant protection.

Its aluminium-intensive monocoque construction is complemented by six airbags and up to three ISOFIX child seat mounting points.

Standard safety features include ABS with EBD, Electronic Brake Assist, Dynamic Stability Control, Roll Stability Control, Electronic Traction Control, Cornering Brake Control, Hill Descent Control, Hill Launch Assist, and Trailer Stability Assist.

Depending on the variant, the Defender is also available with a 3D Surround Camera featuring Wade Sensing, a 360-degree parking camera, Adaptive Cruise Control, and the ClearSight camera-based rear-view mirror, which maintains rear visibility even when the luggage area is fully loaded.

The high-performance Defender OCTA additionally features an upgraded braking system designed to deliver consistent stopping performance under demanding driving conditions

competition

The Defender closely competes with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Jeep Wrangler in its segment.

The G-Class offers stronger brand prestige, a more premium cabin, and excellent resale value. The Defender counters with greater practicality, a wider choice of body styles (90, 110, and 130), and superior off-road capability in some areas, including a 900 mm wading depth compared to the G-Class's 700 mm.

The Wrangler focuses on hardcore off-roading, with features such as removable doors and roof, a solid front axle, and the Rock-Trac four-wheel-drive system. The Defender, however, offers a more premium interior, better ride comfort, superior technology, and greater everyday practicality, along with much more passenger and luggage space, especially in 110 and 130 forms.
