Kia Carens Overview

Updated on March 27, 2026

The Kia Carens, originally a global family hauler also known as Rondo, transitioned into its current fourth-generation model in 2022 for markets like India. This iteration adopts a bold crossover-inspired design under Kia's "Opposites United" philosophy.

This design principle is applied to a chassis measuring 4540mm long with a 2780mm wheelbase, offering spacious 6/7-seater interiors with flexible seating and 216L boot space. Meanwhile its performance is delivered by a 1.5L petrol or a 1.5L diesel, paired with manual or automatic transmissions available across the range to balance power and efficiency.

The cabin experience is centered on family practicality, featuring a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, alongside various premium comfort elements like ambient lighting and ventilated seats in higher trims.

Safety is prioritized with the Robust 10 Hi-Safety Package, comprising up to 6 airbags, ESC, all-wheel disc brakes, TPMS, and additional driver aids that maintain the model's modern appeal.

Engine and Performance

The Carens is offered in petrol or diesel variants, powered by a 1.5L four-cylinder engine, with the petrol variant delivering 115 hp at 6,300 rpm and 143.8 Nm of torque, while the diesel alternative produces an identical 115 hp, but at 4,000 rpm and offers a higher torque of 250 Nm available between 1,500 and 2,750 rpm.

Both variants come paired with a 6-speed manual transmission in a two-wheel drive (2WD) configuration.

fuel economy

As per ARAI-certified figures, both petrol and diesel variants of the Carens claim up to around 15.58 kmpl.

interior

The Carens cabin features a modern design with a black high-gloss dashboard with techno print, soft-touch materials, and two-tone interior options such as Triton Navy and Beige or Black and Beige.

Up front, the leather-wrapped D-cut steering wheel offers telescopic adjustment and mounted controls, while the driver gets a 10.25-inch full-digital colour instrument cluster that displays key driving information, while a matching 10.25-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with connected features for entertainment and navigation.

Additionally, the three-row 6/7-seater configurations provide usable space across all rows, with sliding and reclining second-row seats and adequate legroom and headroom for passengers.

The layout is rounded out by several practical touches, including multiple storage spaces, several USB charging ports, and a 216-litre boot capacity with all seats in place, which increases when the rear seats are folded.

exterior

The exterior of the Carens features a modern design built around Kia’s signature Tiger Nose grille with chrome accents and a digital radiator grille pattern. The front includes crown jewel LED headlamps and Star Map LED daytime running lights that frame the grille and lighting signature.

Along the sides, the body incorporates roof rails, body-coloured door handles, and chrome beltline detailing. This profile is further enhanced by electrically adjustable outside mirrors that feature integrated LED turn signals.

Depending on the specific trim and engine configuration, the vehicle is equipped with either 15-inch or 16-inch steel wheels paired with full-size wheel covers, while higher trims upgrade to 16-inch dual-tone crystal-cut alloy wheels.

At the rear, the roofline extends into a sleek shark fin antenna. The back design naturally integrates Star Map LED tail lamps, a silver-finished bumper garnish, and a rear spoiler that safely houses a high-mount stop lamp.

safety

The Carens comes with the "Robust 15 Hi-Safety Package" that prioritizes essential protection across the range, featuring six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), all-wheel disc brakes, among others. It also integrates a Highline Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and ISOFIX child anchors for younger passengers. Building on these aids, it includes a rear-view camera and keyless entry equipped with a burglar alarm.

As for safety crash tests, the Global NCAP gave the vehicle a 3-star rating for adult occupant protection (9.30/17.00) and a 3-star rating for child occupant protection (30.99/49.00), with improvements noted in further tests.

competition

The Kia Carens competes closely against the Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga and the XL6 in its segment.

The Ertiga is lighter, offers better fuel economy (especially with CNG), and benefits from Maruti’s wider service network. Conversely the Carens wins on interior quality, standard safety (six airbags vs. two on base Ertiga trims), and offers a torquey diesel engine.

The XL6 on the other hand comes with captain seats in select trims and slightly better claimed mileage than the Carens, while the latter provides a true 7-seater option, and more powerful engine choices.
