Toyota Fortuner Latest Updates

February 2026, a new near-production test mule of the next-generation Fortuner has been spotted testing, revealing a boxier, more aggressive Hilux-inspired redesign with a blacked-out upper half. Riding on an upgraded ladder-frame platform, the new SUV promises a massive cabin overhaul featuring dual screens, a 360-degree camera, and the much-requested addition of a Level 2 ADAS suite.

The familiar 2.8L diesel and 2.7L petrol engines are expected to carry over, likely joined by a 48V mild-hybrid option, ahead of an expected global debut in mid-2026 and an India launch by 2027.

Toyota Fortuner Overview

Updated on March 25, 2026

The Toyota Fortuner has been peerless since its launch in 2009. Derived from the global Hilux pickup platform and assembled at Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s Bidadi plant, it is designed as a true body-on-frame vehicle meant for both tough terrain and long-distance highway cruising.

Under the hood, buyers have a choice between a 2.7-litre petrol and a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, paired with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission in 2WD or 4WD configurations.

Inside, it provides comfortable seating for seven adults, good material quality, modern infotainment, and ample storage. Meanwhile, the exterior showcases a muscular stance with LED lighting and functional off-road elements.

Ultimately, it continues to be a segment benchmark for those seeking go-anywhere ability and low maintenance costs, while also retaining excellent resale value similar to the most in-demand used cars.

Engine and Performance

The Fortuner tailored to different driving demands, the 2.7-liter petrol engine delivers 164 hp and 245 Nm and can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

However, the more popular 2.8-liter turbo-diesel pushes out 201 hp and generates 420 Nm when equipped with a 6-speed manual, and to a high 500 Nm when mated to the 6-speed automatic.

Additionally, a 48V mild-hybrid version of the 2.8L diesel is also offered. By integrating an electric motor assist, this setup is designed to deliver punchier low-speed responsiveness and smoother stop-start operation, all while preserving the diesel’s peak power and torque figures.

fuel economy

The Fortuner's ARAI-certified fuel efficiency varies across its powertrain options. The 2.7-liter petrol automatic returns an official 10.3 kmpl.

Meanwhile, the 2.8-liter diesel variants deliver higher efficiency. The diesel manual achieves between 14.4 and 14.6 kmpl, depending on the 4x2 or 4x4 configuration, while the diesel automatic is rated closely between 14.2 and 14.4 kmpl.

Additionally, the 48V mild-hybrid diesel automatic provides the highest figure at 14.6 kmpl. Across all configurations, an 80-liter fuel tank comes standard, ensuring extended range for long-distance travel.

interior

The Fortuner’s cabin features a dual-tone layout with soft-touch materials, metallic accents, and woodgrain-patterned inserts. It offers seating for seven occupants, with higher variants adding ventilated and power-adjustable front seats with lumbar adjustment.

The second row includes a 60:40 split slide-and-recline function, while the third row provides one-touch tumble access and recline capability. Cabin storage includes a cooled glovebox, centre console with armrest, bottle holders, and multiple cupholders.

Infotainment is handled by an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, along with steering-mounted controls and a multi-information display. Depending on the variant, features may include a JBL sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, electrochromic mirror, and wireless charging.

Lastly, boot capacity is rated at 296 litres with all seats in place and increases when the third row is folded.

exterior

The Fortuner carries a high-stance, muscular design with strong road presence. The front is defined by a bold trapezoid chrome grille, dusk-sensing LED headlamps with LED line guides, integrated DRLs with turn indicators, and a rugged bumper with a skid plate.

The side profile is clean and purposeful, with chrome door handles and window beltline, aero-stabilising fins on the ORVMs.

At the rear, it gets split LED combination tail lamps, a high-mounted stop lamp, and a power-operated tailgate with height-adjust memory and jam protection on top variants.

Additionally, the vehicle includes machine-finished or super-chrome alloy wheels (17-inch on most 2WD variants and 18-inch on 4WD variants) shod in 265-section tubeless radial tyres, along with a rear fog lamp and 225mm of ground clearance that underpins the vehicle's all-terrain range.

safety

The Fortuner has earned a 5-star safety rating in ASEAN NCAP crash tests, with strong scores in adult (34.32/38) and child (41.47/49) occupant protection. Note that builds from January 2026 onwards are currently unrated. Also, the Indian counterpart has not been tested by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP to date.

As for the safety standards, equipment includes 7 airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), Hill Assist Control (HAC), Active Traction Control (A-TRC), and ISOFIX child seat anchors with tether points on the second row. No ADAS such as autonomous emergency braking or lane-keep assist are offered on any level.

Additional hardware covers seatbelt pre-tensioners with force limiters, WIL Concept front seats for whiplash protection, emergency brake signal, and an impact-absorbing body structure with pedestrian protection support.

competition

The Fortuner's closest direct competitors among ladder-frame or body-on-frame 7-seater SUVs are the Jeep Meridian, and the MG Gloster.

The Meridian provides a more premium and refined monocoque-like ride quality (despite its ladder frame), along with a spacious and well-appointed interior, panoramic sunroof in top trims, and strong highway refinement. The Fortuner leads with higher peak torque output, more serious off-road capability through its part-time 4x4 system with low-range gearing and rear locker, and proven durability for heavy-duty use.

The Gloster's standout strengths are its more upmarket interior, 12.3-inch dual screens, and a 360-degree camera with transparent view. Against that, the Fortuner offers stronger low-end torque from the 2.8-litre diesel, more capable off-road hardware including low-range gearing and a rear locker, and Toyota's well-established advantage in long-term reliability and resale value.
