Engine, Performance and Mileage

The heart of the Africa Twin is its 1082.96 cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine, compliant with BS6 Phase 2 norms. It produces a modest but highly usable 99.2 PS at 7500 rpm and 103 Nm of torque at 6250 rpm. In a segment where competitors often breach the 150 PS mark, these figures might appear underwhelming on paper. However, the engine's character is defined by its tractability and linear power delivery, not peak output. The 270-degree crank configuration gives it a V-twin-like feel and an engaging exhaust note. In India, the motorcycle is offered exclusively with a 6-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT), which offers both automatic and manual paddle-shift modes. 

Throttle response, governed by a ride-by-wire system, is exceptionally smooth across all riding modes, eliminating jerky inputs that can unsettle a motorcycle off-road. In urban environments, the DCT’s automatic mode is a significant advantage, managing the engine’s torque effortlessly in stop-and-go traffic. On the highway, the powertrain settles into a relaxed cruise, with sufficient torque for quick overtakes without needing aggressive downshifts. Real-world fuel efficiency hovers around 18-20 kmpl, which, combined with the 24.8-litre fuel tank on the Adventure Sports model, provides a theoretical range of over 450 km.

Ergonomics on the Africa Twin are tailored for long-duration touring and stand-up off-road riding. The riding posture is upright and neutral, with a wide handlebar and well-positioned footpegs that minimise fatigue over long distances. The seat is broad and well-padded, providing excellent support for the rider. Pillion comfort is also well-catered for, with a spacious rear seat and sturdy grab rails. However, the seat height, adjustable between 850 mm and 870 mm, is a critical consideration. For riders below 5'8", managing the bike's top-heavy feel at standstill can be challenging, though the motorcycle's slim mid-section does help. 

Heat management from the parallel-twin engine is reasonably effective, with engine heat being directed away from the rider's legs, a crucial factor in Indian riding conditions. For practicality, the Adventure Sports model comes with a standard rear luggage rack, and Honda offers a range of optional accessories, including panniers and a top box, to enhance its touring credentials. The large, adjustable windscreen provides excellent protection from windblast on the highway, further bolstering its touring capabilities.

The Africa Twin's chassis and suspension package is arguably its most compelling attribute. The Adventure Sports model sold in India comes equipped with Showa EERA (Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment) semi-active suspension. This system offers 230 mm of travel at the front and 220 mm at the rear, constantly adjusting damping forces based on the selected ride mode (Tour, Urban, Gravel, Off-road) and real-time inputs from the IMU. The result is a ride quality that is exceptionally plush over broken Indian roads, absorbing undulations and potholes with remarkable composure. Despite its 250 kg kerb weight and long-travel suspension, high-speed stability is excellent. 

The 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel combination, shod with tubeless tyres, is optimised for off-road capability, providing superior control over loose surfaces. This setup, however, results in slightly slower turn-in on tarmac compared to road-biased ADVs with 19-inch front wheels, like the Ducati Multistrada V4. Braking is handled by twin 310 mm petal discs with radially mounted four-piston calipers at the front and a 256 mm disc at the rear. The system, aided by cornering ABS, provides strong, progressive stopping power with ample feedback, inspiring confidence both on and off the road.

Design

The Africa Twin’s design is functional and purpose-built, reflecting its rally-raid heritage. The tall stance, large fuel tank, and extensive bodywork on the Adventure Sports model provide significant presence and excellent weather protection. Lighting is an all-LED affair, featuring distinctive dual headlights with integrated cornering lights that illuminate the inside of a turn based on lean angle—a practical feature for night riding on winding roads. The instrument cluster is a unique dual-screen setup. A small, fixed LCD screen displays essential data like speed and gear position, while a larger 6.5-inch TFT touch-screen below it handles navigation, media, and detailed vehicle settings. This TFT display supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a significant advantage for long-distance touring. 

The electronic suite is comprehensive, offering four standard riding modes plus two customisable 'User' modes. These modes adjust power delivery, engine braking, traction control (HSTC), and wheelie control. While the feature list is extensive, navigating it through the switchgear on the left handlebar can be complex and requires a learning curve, with over 20 buttons and switches vying for the rider's attention.

Honda has equipped the Africa Twin with a sophisticated safety package built around a six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). This system provides the data for a host of advanced electronic aids that function with a high degree of precision. The cornerstone is the cornering ABS, which modulates braking pressure even when leaned over in a turn, significantly reducing the risk of a low-side crash caused by panic braking. The Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), or traction control, is also lean-sensitive and offers seven levels of intervention, allowing the rider to tailor the system's intrusiveness to the terrain and their skill level. 

Furthermore, the IMU enables three-level wheelie control and rear lift control, preventing the rear wheel from lifting under aggressive braking. The integrated cornering lights enhance visibility during night rides on winding roads. This comprehensive suite of electronics is on par with the safety standards set by its primary European competitors, ensuring a high level of rider confidence across diverse and challenging conditions, from wet tarmac to loose gravel trails.
