Mahindra Scorpio

The Scorpio Classic is the familiar, go-anywhere Mahindra SUV, that retains its famous boxy and bold exterior that many buyers instantly recognize, refreshed just enough to sit alongside the newer Scorpio-N. After more than two decades on our roads it still carries that old-world charm and a high road presence, plus flexible 7- and 9-seat configurations. Under the skin it has a high performant Gen-2 mHawk diesel engine and a strong body-on-frame, which makes it usable over rough roads and for power hauling, which is exactly what buyers who value toughness and space want. Even with these highs however, the Scorpio Classic does show the limits of that old-school construction.

Mahindra Scorpio Overview

Updated on March 10, 2026

The Mahindra Scorpio Classic is a tough, body-on-frame SUV engineered for heavy usage, comfort and an authoritative road presence. Available in flexible 7-seater and 9-seater configuration options, it is powered by a 2.2-litre Gen-2 mHawk 4-cylinder diesel engine, delivering 130 bhp at 3750 rpm and 300 Nm of torque between 1600-2800 rpm. This powertrain is paired with a cable-operated 6-speed manual transmission in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) layout. While it skips an automatic transmission or a 4x4 drivetrain, it compensates with strong mid-range torque, heavy-duty utility and an ARAI-claimed fuel efficiency of 14.44 kmpl.

The SUV spans 4456 mm in length and offers a commanding 209 mm of ground clearance, making it highly capable on rough terrains. Also, the car is equipped with a 22.86cm touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, dual-tone upholstery and cruise control, the Scorpio Classic successfully blend go-anywhere boldness with essential modern comforts.

engine and performance

Scorpio Classic consists of a refined 2.2-litre Gen-2 mHawk all-aluminum diesel engine. This updated powertrain sheds 55 kg compared to its cast-iron predecessor, noticeably reducing NVH levels and improving overall efficiency. It generates a steady output of 130 bhp at 3750 rpm and a substantial 300 Nm of peak torque spanning between 1600-2800 rpm. Impressively, Mahindra claims that 77% of this torque is accessible from just 1000 rpm, providing excellent low-end grunt for effortless city drivability and heavy load-hauling with virtually no turbo lag.

Mahindra has high roll stiffness and has hydraulic dampening into the steering column, which mitigates some of the top-heaviness and improves stability during high speeds. However, there is a significant amount of body roll present, though the engine feels less noisy at higher rpm. Also, the inherent body-on-frame rocking motion remains slightly evident on uneven patches.

fuel economy

According to ARAI certifications, it delivers a claimed fuel efficiency of around 14.44 kmpl to 15.0 kmpl. Under real-world driving conditions, users can expect an economy of 11-13 kmpl in stop-and-go city traffic, while steady highway cruising yields a more efficient 14-16 kmpl.

Also equipped with a 60-litre fuel tank, the Scorpio Classic provides a solid driving range of approximately 800 to 900 kilometers on a full tank. This extended range makes it highly practical for long inter-city journeys and extensive rural usage without the constant need for refueling stops.

interior

The cabin inside the Mahindra Scorpio Classic prioritizes space over plush luxury and is tailored for SUV buyers who value seating comfort. The dashboard is upright with a dual tone color theme (typically beige and black), offering a clear view of controls and gauges for the driver. The gauge cluster happens to be semi-digital, a disappointing aspect when thinking about the price tag the SUV comes with.

The touchscreen infotainment system (around 9 inches) takes center stage though it still stays lackluster. It supports phone mirroring (Android Auto/Apple CarPlay) and basic audio controls, while the steering wheel typically features a leatherette wrap for grip comfort.

It has supportive fabric seats up front and flexible arrangements for rear rows – depending on configuration, it can be a 7-seater (including second-row captain seats or bench) or 9-seater with side-facing jump seats, improving versatility for families or group travel. However, the seat cushioning is mostly flat and the contours were far away from ergonomic.

Fully automatic temperature control (FATC) with second-row AC vents ensures cabin comfort even in hot conditions and multiple storage cubbies plus practical power window controls reflect the Classic’s focus on everyday usability rather than premium flair.

The boot space stands at an impressive 460 liters.

exterior

The Scorpio Classic has gone under multiple facelifts in the past, but the current model has a high appeal in both style and appearance. Measuring 4456 mm in length, 1820 mm in width (excluding ORVMs) and 1995 mm in height, with a 2680 mm wheelbase, it delivers a tall, imposing stance complemented by 209 mm ground clearance for confident handling on varied Indian terrain.

The front fascia (decorative panels) showcases a bold grille with vertical chrome slats and the signature Twin Peaks logo, flanked by projector headlamps (with LED eyebrows and daytime running lamps on higher trims).

A muscular bonnet with hood scoop adds character, while the side profile includes prominent muscular cladding (painted on select variants) and 43.18 cm (17-inch) diamond-cut alloy wheels (or steel wheels depending on trim).

safety

The SUV unfortunately only comes equipped with dual front airbags for the driver and passenger as standard. It features an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) to improve vehicle stability and control in emergency scenarios.

Other safety features include rear parking sensors, panic brake indication, a collapsible steering column, engine immobilizer, seat belt reminder lamps for the driver and co-driver and speed alert system. Higher variants add anti-theft warning and auto door lock while driving.

competition

The Mahindra Scorpio Classic mainly competes in the SUV space against its better facelift – Scorpio N, along with other SUV lineups such as Mahindra Bolero, Force Gurkha and Mahindra Thar.

Compared to the more affordable Bolero, the Scorpio Classic offers considerably better performance, refinement and 7-seater comfort while sharing the same tough DNA ideal for bad roads and rural conditions.

Though Gurkha is superior for serious off-roading, Scorpio Classic provides a more comfortable and value-for-money package for daily use.

The Thar has trendy styling and strong off-road capability, but the Scorpio Classic excels in rear seat seating and storage space, along with long-distance comfort.
