2026 Mahindra Scorpio-N Z8 S: First Impressions

I recently got to check out the updated, 2026 Mahindra Scorpio-N in its Z8 S trim, courtesy of Mahindra's Shiva AutoCorp dealership in Saket.

This body-on-frame three-row SUV in its mid-spec guise continues to offer a strong mix of road presence, space and practical features without going into the fully loaded territory of the flagship variants.

Here’s everything that stood out for me.

Exterior Design

The Scorpio-N retains its bold, upright SUV character. Unless you see the SUV in the new colours, it would be impossible to tell this is the updated model, as everything else remains visually unchanged.

The front continues with the dual-barrel LED projector headlamps with C-shaped LED daytime running lamps and sequential turn indicators. A chrome six-slat grille and silver skid plate complete the face.

On the sides you get silver roof rails and the signature scorpion-tail window line detail in chrome finishing.

The Z8 S and Z8 variants continue riding on the same 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels without any changes to its design. Considering Mahindra introduced a new design for the 18-inch wheels on the higher Z8 T and Z8 L variants, this seems very odd.

However, the alloys still look good, and this may not be a dealbreaker for most.

At the rear the tall stacked LED tail lamps give it a distinctive look. Overall it still looks tough and substantial.

Overall, the Z8 S variant looks nearly identical to the Z8, except the Z8 gets chrome finished door handles, while the Z8 S gets body coloured ones.

Interior

After stepping inside and settling in, the 2026 updates become instantly obvious.

You now get a 12.3-inch free-floating touchscreen that supports wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Adrenox connected features and Alexa Built-in. It works with a clear 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster.

The mocha brown and black combination for the interior continues. Leatherette upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear lever, and a high-gloss centre console give the cabin a neat finish.

You also get 65W USB Type-C ports for both front and rear passengers, UV and IR-cut glass on the side windows, and an Adventure Statistics display that shows roll, pitch, altitude and G-force data.

Features like dual-zone automatic climate control, passive keyless entry, push-button start, power-folding ORVMs, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and a tyre-pressure monitoring system are absent, available on the higher Z8 variants.

The front seats offer good support for long drives.

The second row is spacious and comfortable, while the third row works for shorter journeys or children.

Boot space remains practical at 460 litres with the third row folded. Folding down the second row opens up 786 litres of space.

Powertrains

The Z8 S is offered with all the four engine and gearbox options, but only in rear-wheel-drive configuration.

The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine comes paired to a 6-speed manual (around 172 bhp and 370 Nm) or a 6-speed torque-converter automatic (same power with 400 Nm of torque). The 2.0-litre turbo petrol producing 200 bhp comes with the same 6-speed manual (370 Nm torque) and automatic (380 Nm) units.

The diesel is known for strong low-down torque that suits both city and highway use. The turbo petrol is punchy and enthusiastic, but also drinks more fuel.

Real-world mileage figures for the diesel hover around 10-13 km/l in city traffic and 16-17 km/l during open highway cruising. Expect figures under 10 km/l in city traffic, and 14-15 km/l on extended highway runs.

We drove the pre-facelift Scorpio N Z8 L diesel automatic, and you can check out the review of the same.

Safety

The Z8 S comes well loaded with safety tech, including six airbags, electronic stability control, rear parking sensors and camera, hill-hold and hill-descent control, all-disc brakes, ISOFIX mounts and driver drowsiness detection.

The Scorpio N achieved a 5-star Global NCAP rating shortly after its launch in 2022. Advanced tech like Level 2 ADAS and the 540-degree camera system are reserved for the top Z8L variant.

Competition

The Scorpio N continues competing with the Tata Safari, Mahindra's own XUV 7XO, Hyundai Alcazar and the MG Hector Plus.

While most rivals use monocoque construction, the Scorpio-N stands out with its body-on-frame build, higher ground clearance and more rugged character at a competitive price.

Should You Buy One?

If you want a proper three-row body-on-frame SUV with a good set of modern features without paying for the top-spec extras, the Z8 S is a sensible choice.

Priced from roughly Rs 17.80 lakh for the petrol manual to Rs 19.90 lakh for the diesel automatic (ex-showroom), the Z8 S gives you the exterior looks of the Z8, big screens, leatherette cabin, LED lighting, and solid safety equipment without the higher price of the fully loaded variants.

For buyers who are seeking an indestructible SUV feel, great ride quality over bad roads, good space, and the convenience of an automatic, the Scorpio N Z8 S hits a practical sweet spot.
