Maruti Suzuki Brings CNG-AMT Options To The Swift, Baleno and Dzire

Maruti Suzuki has launched automatic gearbox options on its CNG range for the first time for the Baleno, Dzire and Swift, making it only the second Indian carmaker to pair CNG with an AMT after Tata Motors did so first on the Tiago and Tigor in 2024.

Prices start at Rs 7.92 lakh for the Swift, Rs 8.32 lakh for the Baleno and Rs 8.53 lakh for the Dzire, all ex-showroom. Each model costs around Rs 35,000 more than its manual CNG equivalent, which is a fair ask for the convenience of a two pedal setup in city traffic.

Maruti says its CNG sales grew 58 percent year on year in the first quarter of this year, so the push to make CNG more accessible with an automatic is a natural next step.

Price and variants

The Swift CNG AMT is offered on the VXi, VXi-O and ZXi trims, skipping the range-topping ZXi+. The Baleno gets the automatic CNG option on Delta and Zeta trims, while the Dzire offers it on VXi and ZXi.

The AMT also claims better mileage than the manual across all three models, with the Dzire seeing the biggest gain at 2.74 km per kg more.

Engine and Claimed Fuel Efficiency

All three share the same 1.2 litre, three cylinder Z12E engine with a 55 litre CNG tank alongside a 37 litre petrol tank. On petrol, the engine makes around 83PS and 112Nm, dropping to roughly 70PS and 102Nm on CNG, a drop common across factory CNG cars.

As for fuel efficiency, the Swift CNG AMT claims 35.34 km per kg, compared with 32.85 km per kg for the manual.

The Baleno CNG AMT claims 34.47 km per kg against 33.61 km per kg for the manual, while the Dzire CNG AMT returns 36.47 km per kg compared with 33.73 km per kg on manual.

This gives the AMT versions a claimed mileage gain of 2.49 km per kg on the Swift, 0.86 km per kg on the Baleno and 2.74 km per kg on the Dzire.

CNG tank and boot space

All three use a single 55 litre tank mounted inside the boot rather than the underbody layout Maruti first used on the Victoris and later the Brezza, so boot space takes a hit on every car.

The Swift and Dzire lose their spare wheel entirely to accommodate the tank. The Baleno keeps its spare wheel but has very little usable luggage space remaining with both the tank and spare sharing the boot.

The Tata Altroz CNG AMT, the Baleno's nearest rival on this combination, uses twin cylinders instead and still manages 210 litres of boot space, which is a meaningful difference in daily use.

Features

Equipment matches the equivalent petrol trims. The Swift ZXi CNG AMT gets 15 inch alloys, LED headlamps, wireless phone charging, automatic climate control with rear vents and rear USB-C points. The Dzire and Baleno carry similar kit at their respective trim levels.

Every CNG AMT variant also adds a dedicated fuel change switch, CNG instrument readouts and a retuned suspension for the tank's added weight.

Rivals

The Swift CNG AMT's closest rival is the Tata Tiago iCNG AMT, priced from around Rs 7.90 lakh. The Dzire's nearest match is the Tigor iCNG AMT, which starts near Rs 8.85 lakh.

Tata's cars use a twin cylinder setup that preserves more boot space, while Maruti's single large tank trades that off against a lower kit cost.
