Smart Summary for Car Selection
Why Choose Volkswagen Taigun? Why choose the Volkswagen Taigun
- The 1.5-litre turbo petrol makes 148bhp and 250Nm, so overtaking a line of trucks on a two-lane highway takes one short burst of throttle.
- Its 2,651mm wheelbase is 153mm longer than the Nexon's, so rear passengers get more legroom on long family drives.
- It feels fun to drive without a big compromise in ride comfort, so ghat roads and winding highways are enjoyable while passengers stay comfortable.
- It holds a 5-star Global NCAP rating and comes with six airbags as standard, so every version gives families a tested structure with full airbag cover.
- The 385-litre boot opens up to 1,405 litres with the rear seats folded, so bulky cartons or a house move become possible with the seats down.
Why not choose the Volkswagen Taigun
- It is sold with petrol engines only and has no CNG, diesel or hybrid, so a buyer covering high monthly distances has no low-running-cost option.
- There are no ADAS features, so long intercity trips on busy expressways get no lane-keeping or distance assistance to reduce driver fatigue.
- The rear-view camera has poor resolution and there is no 360-degree camera option, so reversing into a tight slot at night relies on mirrors and sensors.
- Ground clearance is 188mm, 20mm less than the Nexon's 208mm, so a loaded Taigun needs more care over tall speed breakers and broken rural roads.
- Rated mileage of 18.85 to 19.98kpl trails the Nexon diesel's 23.23 to 24.08kpl, so a high-mileage driver spends considerably more on fuel.
- At 4,221mm long it is 226mm longer than the sub-four-metre Nexon, so it needs a bigger slot in crowded city parking.
Why Choose Tata Nexon? Why choose the Tata Nexon
- It is the only car of the two with diesel and CNG options, so a high-mileage buyer can pick the fuel that costs least for the way they drive.
- The diesel AMT is rated at 24.08kpl, so a daily 80km commuter in heavy traffic gets two-pedal driving along with diesel economy.
- It holds five stars from Bharat NCAP as well as Global NCAP, so its safety has been confirmed under the current Indian test protocol too.
- A 360-degree camera is available, which the Taigun does not offer, so tight basement parking and narrow lanes are easier to handle.
- At 3,995mm long it slips into smaller parking gaps, which helps in crowded markets and older residential complexes.
- Its 208mm ground clearance leads the segment, so flooded dips and tall speed breakers are cleared without scraping.
Why not choose the Tata Nexon
- Its 2,498mm wheelbase is 153mm shorter than the Taigun's, so rear legroom is tighter for tall passengers on long journeys.
- It has nothing to match the Taigun's 148bhp 1.5-litre turbo petrol, so fast highway overtakes with a full cabin need more planning.
- The smoother dual-clutch automatic is limited to higher petrol versions, so budget buyers get the AMT instead.
- Cup holders are missing and storage spaces are limited, so everyday items end up loose in the cabin on long drives.
- Fit and finish on some carried-over parts is inconsistent, which becomes noticeable to a buyer who spends time in the cabin every day.
Our Recommendation For Most BuyersWho should buy the Volkswagen Taigun
Drivers who enjoy the road and want a larger five-seater with strong turbo performance will prefer the Taigun. Its 1.5-litre engine delivers fast highway overtakes, it handles well without ruining ride comfort, and the longer wheelbase gives rear passengers more legroom. A 5-star Global NCAP rating and six standard airbags make it a safe family car, and the boot folds out to a huge load space.
What you give up is fuel choice and convenience technology. It is petrol only, rated mileage trails the Nexon diesel, and there is no ADAS or 360-degree camera, while the rear camera image is poor. Ground clearance is lower and the longer body is harder to park. If you drive mainly on highways, value handling and rear space, and can accept higher fuel costs, the Taigun is the more engaging SUV to own.
Who should buy the Tata Nexon
Families who want low running costs, tested safety and ease of use in the city will find the Nexon the more practical buy. Its diesel and CNG options cut fuel bills, the diesel AMT pairs economy with two-pedal driving, and five-star ratings from both Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP back up six standard airbags. A 360-degree camera, segment-leading ground clearance and a sub-four-metre body make it easy to live with on crowded, broken roads.
The trade-offs are rear space and performance. The wheelbase is much shorter than the Taigun's, nothing in the range matches the 1.5-litre turbo's pace, and the smoother dual-clutch sits only on higher petrol versions. Cabin storage and fit and finish are weaker. For a high-mileage family that drives mostly in cities and wants low fuel bills, the Nexon covers more ground than the Taigun.

Things We Like in Volkswagen Taigun
- VW says the 1.0L is more efficient
- New 8 speed automatic for 1.0 variants
Things We Like in Tata Nexon
- Holds 5-star ratings from both Bharat NCAP (2024) and Global NCAP (2024), scoring 29.41/32 and 32.22/34 respectively for adult occupant protection.
- The 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCA) is a notably sophisticated transmission for this price band, featuring wet clutch technology with active cooling, machine learning adaptation, and a self-healing mechanism.
Things We Don't Like in Volkswagen Taigun
- No 360-degree camera or ADAS
- No fog lamps trend is pretty much uncalled for
Things We Don't Like in Tata Nexon
- Knee airbags are not available on any variant, a gap that is flagged in the Bharat NCAP safety equipment listing.
- The CNG variant is available only with a 6-speed manual transmission system. No automatic option exists for buyers who want both CNG running costs and a gearbox-free driving experience.
