Nissan X-Trail Overview

Updated on April 17, 2026

The Nissan X-Trail is a Japan-engineered 7-seater SUV powered by a 1.5-litre variable compression turbo petrol engine paired with a 12V mild-hybrid system and XTRONIC CVT. This powertrain is designed to balance performance and fuel efficiency.

The design focuses on cabin refinement, with aerodynamic optimisation intended to reduce road noise. Inside, the X-Trail offers flexible seating configurations for everyday practicality, along with features such as a digital driver display, touchscreen infotainment with smartphone mirroring, a 360-degree camera and driver-assist systems.

In addition, with 210 mm of ground clearance and R20 wheels, the SUV is configured to handle varied road conditions while maintaining its positioning as a premium three-row family SUV.

Engine and Performance

The X-Trail is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with Nissan’s variable compression technology and ALiS 12V mild-hybrid system. This unit produces 161 hp at 4800 rpm and 300 Nm between 2800 and 3600 rpm.

Power is sent to the front wheels through Nissan’s third-generation XTRONIC CVT with D-Step Logic Control, designed to deliver smoother response in city driving and during overtaking.

Here, Nissan’s patented variable compression system can adjust the compression ratio between 8:1 and 14:1 depending on driving conditions, which is meant to balance performance under hard acceleration and better fuel efficiency during cruising.

Meanwhile, the mild-hybrid system provides torque assist, enables extended idle-stop and quicker restarts, and can also recover energy during deceleration.

fuel economy

The X-Trail achieves an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 13.7 km/l, supported by a 55-litre fuel tank.

interior

The X-Trail’s dashboard follows a clean, drive-centric Japanese layout with soft-touch materials, dual-zone automatic climate control and red ambient lighting for a premium feel.

At the wheel, the leather-wrapped steering includes mounted controls and a tactile dial switch to cycle through the instrument cluster layouts. Behind it, the 31.2 cm full TFT digital cluster displays configurable information with a Kiriko cut-glass texture background and real-time vehicle data.

In the center, an optional upgrade adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility to the 20.32 cm touchscreen, with four speakers, two tweeters, Bluetooth and a smartphone wireless charger located ahead of the gear selector.

For seating, front seats use black cloth upholstery, where the driver gets 6-way manual adjustment plus 2-way electric lumbar support while the passenger seat adds a height lifter in addition to 6-way manual adjustment and 2-way manual lumbar support.

Alongside this, the butterfly-opening centre console and floating lower storage provide easy access for all occupants, while rear doors open to 85 degrees for easier child-seat installation and loading.

Moving back, rear space benefits from 40/20/40 split sliding and reclining second-row seats plus a 50/50 split-folding third row. Above, a panoramic electric sunroof spans the roofline, for improved cabin ventilation and letting in natural light for all rows.

Finally, boot space measures 177 litres behind the third row, expanding to 585 litres with the third row folded, and 1,424 litres with both second and third rows fully folded.

exterior

Exterior styling wise, up front, the X-Trail features the signature Double V-Motion grille with a pin-striped pattern inspired by traditional Japanese Kumiki woodcraft, paired with two-stage LED headlamps that include LED daytime running lights and sequential turn indicators.

From the side, aerodynamic elements such as optimised A-pillar shape, integrated air curtains and 3D tyre deflectors are meant to cut wind noise and drag.

Complementing this, muscular wheel arches house R20 diamond-cut alloy wheels with 255/45 tyres, and the 210 mm ground clearance adds presence without compromising entry.

At the rear, boomerang-shaped LED tail-lamps incorporate a 3D raindrop-effect design, joined by a roof spoiler and shark-fin antenna for a clean, modern finish.

safety

On the safety front, the X-Trail comes with 7 airbags, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Traction Control System, Hill Start Assist with Auto Hold, ABS with EBD, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, among others.

It also gets a a 360-degree camera, including front and rear parking sensors for added convenience.

Regarding crash tests, the X-trail received a 5 star safety rating from the Euro NCAP, scoring 91% in adult occupant protection and 90% in child occupant protection.

It has not yet been crash-tested by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP as of yet.

competition

The Nissan X-Trail’s close rivals in its segment are the Skoda Kodiaq and Toyota Fortuner.
The Kodiaq offers a more powerful turbo-petrol engine and all-wheel-drive availability in select variants for stronger straight-line performance and added grip, while the X-Trail competes with its variable compression turbo mild-hybrid system that delivers superior fuel efficiency, paired with the CVT transmission.

The Fortuner provides greater off-road ability and durability through its ladder-frame chassis, higher low-end torque from the 2.8-litre diesel option (up to 500 Nm) and 4x4 drivetrain availability, whereas the X-Trail counters with its quieter cabin, more advanced Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, 16 flexible seating configurations that fold flat into the floor, and larger effective boot space (585 litres behind the second row).
