Defender Rally has unveiled the Defender Dakar D7X R in its full competition livery before the SUV takes on its first real test at the 2026 Dakar Rally this January. The machine is built from the Defender OCTA but reworked to survive the punishing conditions of rally raid racing while still fitting within the W2RC Stock category rules.

The D7X R retains the OCTA’s D7x body structure, 4.4 litre twin turbo V8, driveline and 8 speed automatic gearbox. Regulations prevent powertrain changes, so the engine remains mechanically untouched and will run on FIA approved sustainable fuel. Final power will be limited under Stock class rules once homologation is confirmed on 1 January 2026.

To cope with Dakar’s extreme terrain, Defender Rally has engineered key upgrades without altering the core shell. Ride height is increased, track width is wider and the SUV now rolls on huge 35 inch tyres. The bodywork is trimmed for better approach and departure angles and under floor protection is strengthened. A 550 litre fuel tank sits inside the rear of the cabin for long stages that can stretch beyond 800 km.

A full roll cage, hydraulic jacks, 3 spare wheels, tools and essential parts complete the rally spec setup.

BILSTEIN joins as the official suspension partner. The D7X R uses coilovers at the front and twin dampers at the rear, tuned to handle high speed desert hits and the extra fuel load. Cooling is heavily revised for desert heat with a single large radiator, 4 electric fans and redesigned bonnet vents. A sand filter protects intake systems and a roof light pod improves visibility during night stages.

Electronics are simplified to a single motorsport control unit and the team has developed a unique Flight Mode that manages torque when the vehicle is airborne to protect the driveline on landing. Inside, the cockpit features FIA navigation equipment, a heads up display and custom fitted 6 point seats for long hours behind the wheel.

The new Geopalette livery blends sand, stone and earth shades with a touch of Aqua inspired by rare desert water bodies. It gives the SUV a raw, purposeful appearance that matches the rally’s brutal nature.

Three crews will race for Defender Rally. Stéphane Peterhansel with Mika Metge, Rokas Baciuška with Oriol Vidal and Sara Price with Sean Berriman will face more than 80 hours of competition across roughly 5,000 km of timed stages. Team Principal Ian James leads the programme, which has already completed over 6,000 km of testing.
