Ather Pothole Alerts: Everything You Need to Know About the New Safety Feature

Ather has introduced Pothole Alerts, a connected safety feature designed to warn riders about road hazards before they reach them. Instead of detecting potholes at the last moment, the system uses data collected from thousands of connected Ather scooters to identify and map recurring road imperfections.

The feature is currently rolling out to select models via an over the air update. Here's everything you need to know about how Ather's Pothole Alerts work, which scooters support the feature and other frequently asked questions.

How does Ather's Pothole Alerts system work?

Ather's Pothole Alerts is an intelligent rider assistance feature that uses crowd sourced road data instead of relying solely on the scooter's onboard sensors.

Every compatible Ather scooter continuously monitors road conditions using sensors such as the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), accelerometers and GPS.

When the scooter passes over a pothole, speed breaker or rough patch, it records the impact pattern and precise location. This information is anonymised and uploaded to Ather's cloud servers over the internet.

The system does not immediately mark every bump as a pothole. Instead, it compares data received from multiple scooters travelling through the same location. Once enough riders report similar road conditions, the hazard is verified and added to Ather's live road quality database. Whenever another rider approaches the same stretch, the scooter downloads the information in real time and displays a visual warning on the dashboard before reaching the obstacle.

Riders using the Halo smart helmet also receive an audio alert, allowing them to keep their eyes on the road. Besides potholes, the system can also warn about rough road sections and speed breakers, making everyday commuting safer, especially at night or on unfamiliar roads.

Which Ather scooters support Pothole Alerts?

The feature is currently available through an over the air software update for Ather's newer connected electric scooters. Compatible models include the Ather 450X, the flagship 450 Apex and the Rizta Z.

Owners do not need to visit a dealership or service centre, as the update is downloaded and installed wirelessly once it becomes available for their scooter.

The entry level Ather 450S and Rizta S do not receive the feature because they lack the necessary hardware and software package required to support it.

Ather has confirmed that Pothole Alerts is designed for Gen 2 and newer scooters equipped with the DeepView dashboard and connected AtherStack software.

Does the feature work without internet?

No. Since Pothole Alerts relies on cloud based mapping and continuously updated road condition data, the scooter requires an active internet connection to download the latest hazard information. 

The alerts are generated using Ather's live database rather than being stored permanently on the scooter. If the scooter is offline, riders can continue using other functions normally, but new pothole warnings and road updates may not be available until connectivity is restored.

Can Ather detect a pothole if riders avoid it?

Not always. Ather's Pothole Alerts system mainly identifies road hazards using data collected when compatible scooters pass over or very close to a pothole. If a rider successfully avoids it, the scooter may not record the impact, meaning no data is generated for that hazard.

However, the system is crowdsourced, so it does not rely on a single rider. If multiple Ather scooters encounter the same pothole, their onboard sensors and GPS data help verify its location and add it to Ather's road hazard database. Once confirmed, other riders approaching the area receive an advance warning on their dashboard.

This also means newly formed potholes may take some time to appear in the system, and hazards that every rider manages to avoid might not be detected at all. As more connected scooters contribute data, the database becomes more accurate and comprehensive over time.
