Mid-Size SUVs Overtake Compact SUVs in India for the First Time

The great Indian compact SUV boom is not over, but it is being quietly upstaged. Kotak Institutional Equities data shows mid-size SUVs, cars above four metres, held 18.2 per cent of domestic passenger vehicle sales in Q1 FY27. Two years ago, that figure was 12.4 per cent, and a year ago, it was 15 per cent. That is a steep climb by any measure.

The compact SUV story looks different by comparison. Their share has dipped to 14.6 per cent in Q1 FY27 from 16.2 per cent in Q1 FY26 and 15.3 per cent in Q1 FY25.

What is worth noting is that the absolute volumes are not falling. Sub-4-metre SUV sales hit a fresh record of 3,97,609 units in Q1 FY27, up 24 per cent year-on-year. The segment is growing, just not fast enough to keep pace with the rest of the market.

Why Buyers Are Moving Up

Kia Seltos and Sonet

The answer is fairly simple. Once you cross a certain income level and have owned a car or two before, the extra money for a larger SUV starts making sense. You get a noticeably bigger cabin, more luggage room, and a longer features list.

Poonam Upadhyay of Crisil Ratings points out that as ownership cycles mature, buyers are more willing to trade up for comfort on longer journeys. Sunroofs, connected features, and safety systems that were once premium additions are now genuine purchase triggers, and mid-size models tend to pack more of these as standard.

The sub-4-metre tax benefit that once made compact SUVs the smarter buy on paper appears to be losing its pull on buyers as household incomes rise.

More New SUVs Are Coming to the Segment

The product response has been swift. Hyundai India MD and CEO Tarun Garg confirmed on the Q1 FY27 earnings call that a new mid-size SUV will arrive during the festive season. The model, codenamed Bc4i, is based on the Bayon platform and is expected to sit below the Creta at around 4.18 metres. It is likely to carry the 1.5-litre NA petrol from the Creta, with a CNG option in the mix as well.

Renault Duster and Nissan Tekton

Renault brought the Duster back to India in January 2026, reviving the nameplate that effectively created this segment when it first launched here in 2012. Nissan followed in July with the Tekton, priced from Rs 10.49 lakh, giving buyers yet another option in a segment that was already competitive.

Three significant nameplates entering the mid-size space within roughly the same year is a fairly clear signal of where manufacturers think the next wave of volume growth is coming from.
