Volkswagen has confirmed it will enter India's sub-four-metre SUV segment with a new compact SUV, expected to arrive in 2027. CEO Thomas Schäfer called the segment a no-brainer, saying Volkswagen needs to be present in it to matter in the Indian market.
The sub-four-metre segment accounts for roughly 28% of all passenger vehicle sales in India, yet Volkswagen has sat on the sidelines since pulling out the Polo hatchback in 2022. The Taigun, starting at roughly Rs 11 lakh, is currently the brand's entry point and sits in the segment above this one.

The upcoming compact SUV will be built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, which also underpins the Skoda Kylaq. The two SUVs will share their platform and powertrain, but will get different styling, interiors and positioning.
On the powertrain front, the Kylaq's 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol is the expected carry-over, producing 113 bhp and 178 Nm. The 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic are likely to be retained, with the possibility of an 8-speed automatic added at launch.
No name, confirmed pricing or launch date has been announced yet. The SUV will be developed and manufactured in India, with exports also planned.
