June 2026 Car Sales As Per VAHAN

The data was sourced from VAHAN on July 1 and provides a more accurate representation of actual car sales. Unlike manufacturer sales figures, which can include wholesale dispatches to dealerships and vehicles that have not yet been sold to customers, VAHAN data only counts vehicles that have been registered in the name of their owners. As a result, it offers a clearer picture of real retail sales.

Maruti Suzuki remains in a league of its own, closing June at 1,44,018 units and a YTD total of 9.27 lakh, more than the next three brands combined. The more interesting fight is right below it. Mahindra has quietly overtaken both Tata and Hyundai in June, finishing second at 44,256 units, its SUV-heavy portfolio anchored by the Scorpio N, Thar Roxx, and the XEV series doing the heavy lifting.

Tata Motors PV sits at third with 42,815 but its YTD of 3.08 lakh is only marginally behind Mahindra's 3.18 lakh, so that battle is far from settled. Hyundai's June at 40,052 is its weakest month this calendar year, a notable slip for a brand that opened January at 66,172. Toyota had a quiet but steady June at 25,799, slightly ahead of May, with the Innova HyCross and Fortuner maintaining consistent pull.

Kia at 22,628 is holding its ground without any major new launch driving volume. Further down, Honda continues to lose relevance at 4,619 units, and Force Motors is in a difficult spot at just 229 in June.

BYD India2353404935427338393,182

Tata Passenger Electric is on a clear upward trajectory, going from 8,949 in January to 11,659 in June, its strongest month of CY2026. The Punch EV and Nexon EV continue to be the volume anchors here. Mahindra Electric is the segment's biggest growth story though, nearly doubling from 3,614 in January to 7,102 in June as the BE 6 and XEV 9/9S deliveries ramp up.

The gap between these two and the rest of the EV pack is significant. VinFast crossed 1,000 units in June for the first time, a small but meaningful milestone, while BYD at 839 is growing steadily even if the absolute numbers remain limited by its premium price positioning.

BMW India leads the premium segment comfortably, crossing 10,000 units YTD and finishing June at 1,671, well ahead of Mercedes-Benz which closed at 1,322. Mercedes had a rough May at 1,153, its weakest month of the year, before recovering slightly in June. The gap between the two German giants at the halfway mark is around 1,500 units, which is meaningful at this price point.

JLR India had its best June at 565, recovering strongly from a weak May of 384, with Defender and Range Rover demand holding up in the luxury SUV space.

Volvo remains rangebound at around 130 units a month with no sign of a breakout. At the very top, Lamborghini, Maserati, and Rolls-Royce operate where monthly dispatches in single digits are entirely normal and the YTD totals of 37, 21, and 5 respectively reflect allocation and order cycles more than actual market demand.

A well-researched and informative article, published on 1 July but having data for June sales is really appreciable.
