All you need to know about BYD Denza and its upcoming D9 MPV

BYD is all set to debut its luxury sub-brand Denza in the final stages of entering the country. The Denza D9 executive MPV is expected to lead that charge, with an internal target of a Diwali 2026 launch, though a fallback to the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in February 2027 remains possible if timelines shift.

What Exactly Is Denza?

Joint Venture for the development of electric vehicles in China. BYD and Daimler AG agree the formation of the 50:50 joint venture "Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Co. Ltd." for the development of electric vehicles for the Chinese market.

Denza has been around longer than most people realise. The brand was founded in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz's parent company at the time) in Shenzhen, making it China's first marque dedicated entirely to new energy luxury vehicles.

The intent was to blend BYD's battery technology with Mercedes-Benz's design and engineering DNA to produce something genuinely upmarket.

For the first decade, the brand struggled to find its footing. It existed mostly in the shadow of both parent companies, without a clear identity of its own.

The turning point came in May 2022 with the launch of the D9 MPV, which gave the brand a genuine flagship and a fresh direction. By September 2024, Mercedes-Benz had exited entirely, selling its remaining 10% stake back to BYD, making Denza a wholly-owned BYD subsidiary.

BYD's design chief for Denza's European push, incidentally, is Wolfgang Egger, who previously served as design director at Audi and Lamborghini, which explains why the brand's newer models look less Chinese-tech and more global-executive.

The D9: What's Coming to India

The Denza D9 is a full-size luxury MPV with a seven-seat configuration and an interior pitched squarely at business-class travel: real wood elements, real metal accents, a Dynaudio sound system, multi-zone climate control all the way to the third row, DiSus-C adaptive suspension, and a cooled centre box for second-row passengers.

It is targeting chauffeur-driven executives and premium family buyers who would otherwise consider the Toyota Vellfire or Mercedes-Benz V-Class.

India powertrainPure electric expected; PHEV version unlikely at launch

The PHEV skip is deliberate strategy, not an oversight. Plug-in hybrids attract a significantly heavier GST structure compared to the 5% that applies to pure EVs. At this price point, a tax penalty of any meaningful size would compromise the D9's entire value proposition against the Vellfire.

Where It Fits and What It Costs

BYD is targeting the gap that has opened up between the MG M9 (Rs 79.95 lakh, ex-showroom) and the Toyota Vellfire (Rs 1.20–1.30 crore). The Denza D9 is expected to arrive at approximately Rs 90 lakh ex-showroom, though that figure has not been confirmed by the brand.

MG M9Rs 79.95 lakhElectric
Denza D9 (expected)~Rs 90 lakhElectric (EV)
Toyota VellfireRs 1.20–1.30 croreHybrid
Lexus LMRs 2.15–2.69 croreHybrid

That positioning is genuinely interesting. At Rs 90 lakh, BYD would be asking buyers to stretch Rs 10 lakh beyond the M9 for a brand with more premium intent, and asking them to save Rs 30+ lakh compared to the Vellfire for what is, on paper, a comparable executive experience.

BYD is reportedly evaluating dedicated Denza showrooms rather than folding the D9 into its existing dealer network. The initial entry will be as a completely built unit, allowing BYD to read demand before making any commitment to localisation.

A portfolio of two to three Denza models in the Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1 crore range is reportedly being evaluated for the first year, with the D9 confirmed as the first.

The Denza name roughly translates from Chinese as "rising power and momentum." Whether that momentum translates to real buyer intent in India's still-growing premium EV segment is the actual test.
