BYD has expanded its India plans beyond pure EVs by introducing its DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid technology, with the Seal U SUV expected to become the brand's first PHEV offering here by the end of 2026. Sold as the Sealion 6 in several international markets, the SUV is positioned as a premium midsize SUV and could open an entirely new segment for BYD in India.

What Is DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid technology?

The DM-i powertrain combines a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, dual electric motors, and an 18.3 kWh Blade Battery. Unlike conventional hybrids where the engine does most of the work, BYD's system prioritises electric drive. During city commutes, the SUV can run in pure EV mode for up to 70 km, while the petrol engine mainly acts as a generator to recharge the battery. The engine directly powers the wheels only during high-speed cruising or heavy load conditions.

BYD claims the powertrain delivers a thermal efficiency of 43.04 percent, among the highest for a production petrol engine. Combined fuel efficiency is rated at 4.8 litres per 100 km, while the total driving range exceeds 1,200 km on a full tank and charge.

Globally, the Seal U DM-i is offered with features such as a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, Level 2 ADAS, ventilated seats, wireless charging, V2L capability, and OTA updates. International markets also get more powerful AWD variants producing over 300 bhp and electric-only ranges exceeding 100 km.

When Will The BYD Seal Launch In India?

For India, the Seal U (AKA Sealion 6) could be priced in the Rs 35 lakh to Rs 45 lakh range, positioning it against premium hybrid SUVs while offering EV-like efficiency without range anxiety. Its arrival will also mark BYD's first direct challenge to Toyota's strong-hybrid dominance in the country.
