The Hyundai Creta sold over 2 lakh units in calendar year 2025 alone, making it the single most bought compact SUV in India for the eleventh consecutive year.

The Tata Sierra returned in November 2025 after a 25-year absence, launched at ₹11.49 lakh and crossing 10,000 deliveries within weeks.

Both are five-seater petrol-and-diesel SUVs priced between ₹11 and ₹21 lakh, sharing segment, fuel types, and broadly similar dimensions but built around completely different priorities.

So here is our detailed comparison between two of the hottest SUVs in the market right now:

You can also use our Sierra vs Creta comparison tool to compare both cars side-by-side on variants, prices, and specs.

Exterior Design

The Creta's 2024 facelift brought in a black chrome parametric radiator grille flanked by horizon LED positioning lamps and DRLs that run in a thin bar across the front face.

Headlamps are quad-beam LEDs on S(O) and above, while base E and EX variants get projector units instead. Connecting LED tail lamps at the rear give it a wide, continuous light signature. Roof rails, rear spoiler, and skid plates are painted silver on most variants, switching to black on the Knight edition.

Colour options include Titanium Black, Atlas White, Robust Emerald Pearl, Titan Grey, Starry Night, Titan Grey Matte (new), and a dual-tone Atlas White with black roof.

The Knight edition is offered in Titanium Black, Titan Grey Matte, Atlas White, Starry Night, and Titanium Black Matte exclusively.

The Sierra's front is shaped around a full-width Light Saber LED DRL bar at the top, below which sit Night Saber Bi-LED Booster projector headlamps on Accomplished+ and standard Bi-LED projectors on lower trims.

Front fog lamps have a cornering function from the Adventure trim. Flush door handles with welcome lights are standard across the range. The tail lamps carry a hidden rear wiper behind them.

Colour options are Pristine White, Pure Grey, Coorg Cloud, Munnar Mist, Bengal Rouge, and Andaman Adventure (a yellow-green exclusive to higher trims). Dual-tone roof is not offered.

Engine, Performance and Mechanicals

Both cars share the same 1,498-1,497cc displacement bracket across their engine families, and both top out at 160PS with their respective turbo-petrol options.

The Creta's 1.5L NA petrol makes 115PS and 143.8Nm adequate for city use but the lowest torque figure in this comparison by a wide margin. The diesel makes 116PS and 250Nm, which is where the Creta feels most relaxed on highways. The turbo-petrol GDi at 160PS and 253Nm is reserved for the King Knight only, paired exclusively with a 7-speed DCT.

The Sierra's NA Revotron petrol is rated at 106PS and 145Nm marginally less power than the Creta NA petrol but almost identical torque. It is available only in MT and does not extend past the Adventure variant. The TGDi Hyperion at 160PS and 255Nm is the performance choice and comes only in AT from Adventure+ upward. The Kryojet diesel is the most torque-rich of the three Sierra engines 260Nm in MT trim and 280Nm in AT, the latter being the highest torque figure of any powertrain in this comparison by 27Nm.

Both cars use a McPherson strut setup at the front. The rear is a coupled torsion beam on the Creta across all variants. The Sierra uses a semi-independent twist beam rear on Smart+ through Adventure, and adds Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD) on both axles from Adventure+ upward a hardware upgrade that firms up high-frequency inputs like broken roads while staying compliant over large bumps.

Both cars also have all-wheel disc brakes standard on every variant.

Safety

Source: Hyundai; Tata Official Sites

Both cars come with 6 airbags as standard across the full range driver, co-driver, side, and curtain. Both have ABS with EBD, ESC, HAC, TPMS, rear disc brakes, ISOFIX, and rear parking sensors on every variant. This is the baseline, and neither car cuts corners at entry level.

Where they diverge is in the stability control sophistication and ADAS availability. The Sierra's ESP suite covers 20 functions including rollover mitigation, dynamic torque vectoring, corner stability control, after-impact braking, and panic brake alert items that don't normally appear below ₹25 lakh. The Creta's ESC is standard but does not publish a comparable function count.

For cameras, the Sierra gets 360-degree HD SVS with 4Sight Blind Spot from Adventure (5th of 7 variants). The Creta's surround view monitor comes in at SX(O) (8th of 9 variants).

ADAS on the Creta is limited to SX and above, while the Sierra offers L2 ADAS from Accomplished and L2+ with 22 features including Intelligent Speed Assist from Accomplished+.

On crash tests, the Sierra holds a confirmed 5-star BNCAP rating. The Creta's last published result is a 3-star Global NCAP score from 2022 on the pre-facelift model. The 2024 facelift has not yet been tested under Bharat NCAP.

Service Network and Warranty

Hyundai operates 1,550 dedicated service points across India as per their own published network data. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles has a combined 3,500+ sales and service touchpoints, which includes non-dedicated service facilities.

For the Creta, this translates to a mature, wide-coverage network with established parts supply even in Tier 2 and 3 cities.

The Sierra launched in late 2025, so while Tata's total network is large, Sierra-specific familiarity and parts depth at smaller workshops will take time to build.

Hyundai's 7-year extended warranty option (petrol only) is also one of the longest available in this segment. The Sierra's 1 lakh km cap is standard for the industry, and the extended warranty is one of the lowest in its segment and costs 20-40K.

CarHP Suggests

The choice between the Sierra and the Creta is an adventure in itself. On one hand, you have something fresh, tech loaded and distinctive like the Sierra, which also comes with a 5-star safety rating.

On the other, there is the Creta, a proven bestseller that sells in huge numbers every year and offers a wider range of powertrain options, better overall refinement, and a more established ownership experience. However, it does not match the Sierra's safety credentials.

If I had the money in my pocket, and considering that safety is a top priority for me personally, I would wait and choose the Sierra once its delivery timelines become more streamlined and predictable.

If you prefer the opposite approach, the Creta remains a safe bet. It is a well-established product with a vast service network and a long track record.

You just need to be comfortable with its 3-star safety rating. Also, a facelift for the Creta is expected in the coming months, although it is still around 9-10 months away, making the current model a perfectly viable option today.
