In its BS6 Phase 2 compliant form, it produces a peak power of 18.4 PS at a high 10,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 14.2 Nm at 7,500 rpm. These figures, while not the highest in the sub-250cc faired category, are delivered with exceptional refinement. 

The engine's key technological highlight is the Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system. This system switches between two separate intake cam lobes at approximately 7,400 rpm, providing a dual character. Below this threshold, the engine is tractable and efficient for city commutes, making urban riding less of a chore. Post 7,400 rpm, the engine's character changes perceptibly, delivering a strong top-end rush that encourages spirited riding. This high-revving nature is managed by a slick-shifting 6-speed gearbox, further enhanced by an Assist & Slipper clutch that ensures light clutch action and prevents rear-wheel hop during aggressive downshifts. In terms of fuel efficiency, real-world figures consistently hover between 40-45 kmpl, a respectable number given the performance on offer.

The motorcycle's primary selling proposition over the standard R15 V4 is its enhanced practicality, stemming directly from its unibody, single-piece seat. More significantly, it transforms the pillion experience. The pillion seat is lower, better cushioned, and easier to access, making it a viable option for carrying a passenger on short to medium journeys—a task that is notoriously difficult on the V4. 

The riding posture, while still committed with clip-on handlebars, is marginally more relaxed than the V4’s setup, reducing strain on the rider's wrists and back during daily commutes. The seat height stands at 815mm, which is manageable for riders of average height. The motorcycle’s liquid-cooling system is efficient at managing heat, and fan operation in heavy traffic is not intrusive. The inclusion of functional grab rails further underscores its practical intent, providing a secure hold for the pillion, a feature often overlooked on purely performance-oriented machines.

This frame, paired with a conventional telescopic front fork and a linked-type monocross rear suspension, provides a ride and handling package that prioritizes precision. Unlike its more expensive sibling, the R15 V4, the R15S forgoes the upside-down (USD) front forks for this cost-effective yet competent setup. The resulting ride quality is firm and communicative; it accurately transmits road surface information to the rider but can feel stiff over sharp bumps and broken tarmac. 

In city traffic, its agility and low kerb weight of 142 kg make it easy to filter through gaps. However, its true capabilities are revealed on open roads and corners, where the chassis inspires immense confidence, allowing for sharp turn-ins and maintaining stability through long, sweeping bends. The braking system comprises a 282mm front disc and a 220mm rear disc, governed by a dual-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). The braking hardware provides strong, progressive stopping power with good lever feedback, allowing for confident deceleration from high speeds without unsettling the motorcycle’s balance.

Design

The R15S carries forward the design language of the R15 V3, a silhouette that remains sharp and aggressive even by current standards. The twin-LED headlamp setup provides a distinctive look and offers adequate illumination for night riding, complemented by an LED tail lamp. The primary point of differentiation from its V4 counterpart is the single-piece seat, which subtly alters the motorcycle's profile, making it appear more cohesive and less track-focused. 

The instrument cluster is a fully digital negative LCD unit, also inherited from the V3. It is comprehensive, displaying a gear position indicator, tachometer, speedometer, odometer, trip meters, and real-time/average fuel consumption data. However, it lacks the modern flair and connectivity features of its rivals. There is no Bluetooth connectivity for call or message alerts, nor is there turn-by-turn navigation, features that are becoming increasingly common in this segment. Practical equipment includes a side-stand engine cut-off switch for safety and standard dual-channel ABS. The R15S deliberately skims on features like traction control or a quick-shifter (available on the R15 V4) to maintain a more accessible price point, focusing its budget on core mechanical components.

Yamaha has equipped the R15S with a standard, non-switchable dual-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). This is a critical safety feature that works independently on both the front and rear wheels, preventing lock-up during emergency braking situations. Its intervention is well-calibrated, offering a strong safety net without feeling overly intrusive during performance riding, a crucial balance for a motorcycle of this nature. The braking hardware, with its 282mm front disc, provides reliable and predictable stopping power, which, when combined with the ABS, inspires confidence in varied road conditions, including wet surfaces. 

Further safety is provided by a side-stand engine cut-off switch, which prevents the rider from accidentally moving off with the stand deployed. While the R15S meets the segment standard with dual-channel ABS, it does miss out on advanced electronic aids like traction control, which is available on the higher-spec R15M variant, a feature that adds an extra layer of safety on low-grip surfaces.
