Yamaha YZF R2 vs R15: Which One Should You Buy?

Yamaha has expanded its R-series family in India with the new YZF R2.

Priced from Rs 2.30 lakh (ex-showroom), it sits above the popular R15 V4, which starts at around Rs 1.75 lakh. Both motorcycles share the aggressive R-series DNA, but they target slightly different buyers.

Design and Styling

Both the R15 and the R2 look like proper supersports.

The R15 V4 already carries strong design cues from bigger Yamaha models with its sharp fairing and compact stance. The R2 takes this further with a more mature, aggressive silhouette, twin LED DRLs, projector headlight and a fuller supersport profile.

If you want the look of a bigger R-bike, the R2 feels closer to that goal.

Engine Performance and Key Underpinnings

This is where the biggest difference lies. The R15 V4 uses a refined 155 cc liquid-cooled engine that makes 18.4 PS and 14.2 Nm, paired to a 6-speed gearbox. It is free-revving, linear and ideal for learning or city-plus-weekend use.

The R2 steps up with a 204 cc liquid-cooled single producing 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm, which is a clear jump in power and torque. Like the R15, it also comes with a 6-speed gearbox featuring an assist and slipper clutch.

Expect stronger acceleration and better highway ability from the R2, while the R15 remains lighter and easier to manage in traffic.

The R15 V4 tips the scales at 141 kg and uses USD forks with a linked monocross rear suspension. It is known for sharp, confidence-inspiring handling.

The R2 weighs 149 kg and gets a 37 mm inverted fork with a monoshock. It should feel planted and more capable at higher speeds, though the extra weight may make it slightly less flickable than the R15 in tight corners.

Features

Both bikes offer dual-channel ABS, traction control and Yamaha’s Y-Connect app support.

The R2 comes standard with a 5-inch TFT console, three riding modes (Street, Rain, Sport) and a bidirectional quickshifter, while higher R15 V4 variants get a TFT screen and unidirectional quickshifter only for upshifts.

Overall, the R2's feature list feels more complete from the base model itself.

Verdict

Go for the YZF R2 if you want more power, stronger highway performance and a bigger supersport feel without jumping to a much higher capacity motorcycle. The R2 is the natural next step for riders who have outgrown the R15 or want more performance from day one.

Both bikes deliver the classic Yamaha R-series experience. Your choice mainly depends on budget and how much extra performance you need.
