Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG Review: Who Should Buy It?

If you are a first-time car buyer, looking for a practical, no-nonsense hatchback that keeps your monthly expenses under control, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG makes a strong case for itself. With rising fuel prices and longer daily commutes, a car that offers low running costs, easy drivability, and enough space for family duties becomes more important than flashy features. The Wagon R has built its reputation over the years as a dependable family car. In its CNG avatar, it focuses even more on efficiency and peace of mind—making it an appealing choice for office commutes, school runs, and weekend errands.

Lately, I have owned the Wagon R CNG LXI variant for almost one year, and driven it for around 15,000km in the city and on highways. Here’s my experience on whether you should still consider it in 2026 or not, and why it is still a popular choice among new car buyers in the budget segment.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG Exteriors

The design of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG is straightforward, just like the regular model. At the front, you get a grille with some chrome finish and halogen headlamps. Since this is the base variant, it does not come with fog lamps. The headlights' throw is basic, and at night drives, I feel that it could have done with a better throw and visibility. For a more confident driving experience at night, I suggest getting aftermarket LED headlamps that do not blind oncoming traffic.

Coming to the side, the Wagon R continues with its tall-boy design, which results in more headroom inside. Additionally, the gates open wide enough, and it makes ingress and egress very easy. Since my family have elderly passengers, it is quite helpful while travelling. Since I own the LXI variant, it is equipped with 13-inch steel wheels, giving it a basic look, but they are practical and easy to maintain.

At the rear, the design is again simple, with vertically placed halogen tail lamps. It gets reverse parking sensors as well, which I feel are pretty effective to use. Since I opted for a CNG, the boot space is partly occupied by the tank. However, there is still usable space above the gas cylinder, and while travelling, I was able to keep small luggage like duffel bags or a couple of backpacks for short trips.

Overall, the Wagon R is not a car that stands out because of its looks, but it focuses more on practicality and ease of use, which is what most family buyers in this segment actually need.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG Interiors

Step inside and the interiors of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG are kept simple and functional. The dashboard design is clean and easy to understand, having a dual-tone finish that adds a bit of contrast, but overall, it feels basic. There are plenty of hard plastics, and these are very well expected at its price. However, the bonus is that these are easy to maintain and durable over prolonged usage.

Since I own the base LXI variant, it does not get any fancy features like a touchscreen or music system from the factory. Instead, I have a very useful space where I place my iPhone or keep my wallet, and I feel it is actually quite practical for daily use. Moreover, to reduce the costs, the Wagon R LXI CNG variant has manual AC controls that are easy to operate, even for someone who is not very tech-savvy.

Regarding practicality, the Wagon R gets your job done. The cabin comes with multiple storage spaces to keep your daily items like bottles, documents, and small bags. The door pockets can easily hold 1-litre water bottles, and during my road trips, it was quite useful.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG Seating Comfort

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is popular for its seating comfort in the market. Talking about the rear seat comfort, it is a comfortable and spacious place to be in. Though some basic features are missing in the Wagon R LXI CNG variant, like rear power windows, but if you wish, you can get them added as an accessory if needed. With this new model, all four headrests are now fixed, and I feel the automaker has cut costs in order to reduce the overall weight. I feel the adjustable ones would have added a bit more comfort, especially for tall passengers in the rear seats.

Where the Wagon R really shines is in space and comfort. Thanks to its tall-boy design, there is plenty of headroom, which means even taller passengers won’t feel cramped. I am around 5’10, and there is enough knee and legroom at the back to sit comfortably without feeling tight. As I upgraded from a 2011 Wagon R to a 2025 model, the difference in cabin space is evident. The cabin is wide enough to accommodate three average-sized adults at the rear, making it suitable for family use.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG Features

When it comes to features, Maruti Suzuki keeps things simple and focuses only on the essentials in the Wagon R LXI CNG. Since it is the base variant, you get front power windows, a 12V charging socket, a basic analogue instrument cluster, and a gear shift indicator that helps you drive more efficiently. It is especially useful if you are a beginner or want to maximise your fuel efficiency.

As mentioned earlier, there is no infotainment system on offer. However, the good part is that you can easily install an aftermarket system as per your budget and preference. Many buyers actually prefer this flexibility, as you can choose a system with features like Bluetooth, Android Auto, or Apple CarPlay without paying extra for a company-fitted unit.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG Safety Features

On the safety front, since I purchased it before the update, my Wagon R LXI CNG covers all the essential requirements. It comes with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, front disc brakes, central locking, and reverse parking sensors. These features are important for everyday safety, especially in city traffic and tight parking conditions.

The reverse parking sensors, in particular, are very useful in parking in narrow spaces or congested areas. While a rear camera is not available in this variant, I suggest you can always add one as an accessory later if you feel the need.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG Engine Performance

Maruti Suzuki offers the Wagon R with two engine options. There is a 1.0L inline three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which makes 67bhp and 91 Nm of torque, paired with a five-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. This is also available with a CNG option. On the other side, there is a 1.2L inline four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which makes 89 bhp and 113 Nm of torque, paired with a five-speed manual or an AMT gearbox.

However, in the CNG variant, the power figures are slightly reduced compared to the regular petrol engine. In the CNG mode, the engine makes 55bhp and 82 Nm of torque, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. Regarding its performance, the power delivery is linear, and it is not meant for spirited driving. The low-end power delivery is good, and the mid-range is the sweetspot, though it affects the fuel efficiency.

As I own a manual, the gearshifts are pretty smooth, and the clutch is on the lighter side. In bumper-to-bumper situations, and since my daily commute is around 100 km, it does not strain. Additionally, too many upshifts and downshifts are not required in traffic jam situations to keep it in the momentum and prevent it from stalling. The engine has tall gearing, and it easily picks up pace in the second gear. Overall, driving the Wagon R is simple and easy, and if you are a first-time car buyer, new-age drivers will not face much difficulty.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is one of the biggest reasons why people consider the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R CNG, and it continues to be one of its strongest points. The automaker claims a fuel efficiency of 33.47 km/kg in CNG mode, but in real-world conditions, the numbers are comparatively lower than expected.

In my daily usage, which is around 100km daily, with air conditioning and some highway runs, my car delivered around 27 km/kg. This is still a very good figure, especially when I spend a lot of time in bumper-to-bumper situations. Though it depends on your driving style as well, you can easily stretch for more numbers on the highways.

To put this into perspective, if you are someone who drives around 30–40 km every day for office commute, school drops, or errands, the Wagon R CNG can help you keep your fuel expenses significantly lower compared to a petrol car. Over a month, this can translate into noticeable savings, making it a smart choice for budget-conscious buyers.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG Ride Quality

The ride quality of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG is on the softer side. The suspensions are well-calibrated to give a comfortable ride quality in the city, but on highways, this setup results in a bouncy ride quality. Moreover, the suspension noise filters inside the cabin as well. When I had four passengers along with me, along with some luggage in the boot, the ride became quite bouncy, and especially on the expansion joints, I had to slow down so that the rear seat passengers wouldn’t go for a toss.

Moreover, I feel that the steering wheel is also a bit disconnected. Though it is an electronically powered steering wheel, it is light in city traffic conditions. But on highways, it could have been added with slightly more weight to give more confidence while driving. Due to its tall-boy design, the body roll is present, and it is not meant for aggressive driving or to be pushed around corners.

What is the price of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG?

The price of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R starts at ₹4.98 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant and goes to ₹6.94 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec variant. However, the price of the CNG variant starts at ₹5.88 lakh (ex-showroom) for the LXI trim.

Should You Buy It?

If your priority is to own a car that is economical to run, easy to maintain, and practical for everyday family usage, the Wagon R LXI CNG makes a very strong case. It is not designed to impress with features or performance. Instead, it focuses on delivering consistent savings, ease of driving, and long-term dependability, which are far more important for a first-time buyer.

That said, you should be clear about what you are getting. The Wagon R LXI CNG prioritises function over form. It does not offer premium interiors, advanced features, or a high-speed highway driving experience. The suspension is tuned for comfort in city conditions, and the light steering makes it easy to drive in traffic, but it is not meant for enthusiastic driving.
