Smart Summary for Car Selection
Why Choose MG Majestor?Why choose
- It is larger than the Fortuner in every dimension that matters, translating into more second and third row space based on early reviews
- Three differential locks across front, centre and rear axles, plus ten terrain modes, give it off-road hardware the Fortuner's diesel range does not match
- The twin-turbo diesel produces more peak power than the Fortuner's single-turbo unit, and the infotainment and feature list are noticeably longer
- Tyre pressure monitoring comes standard, where it is an added extra on the Fortuner
Why not choose
- MG's dealer and service network in India remains considerably smaller than Toyota's, which matters more over a decade of ownership than at the point of sale
- The twin-turbo diesel is a more complex two-stage setup than the Fortuner's single-turbo unit, with more components such as wastegates and cooling circuits that can go wrong
Why Choose Toyota Fortuner?Why choose
- Toyota's after-sales quality and low running costs are the single biggest reason owners cross-shop away from newer rivals, backed by years of ownership threads confirming it
- The diesel engine has built a reputation over more than a decade for durability that few rivals in this segment can point to
- Resale value stays strong compared with most body-on-frame rivals, a point owners raise when justifying the purchase price
- Long-term owners report the interior and mechanicals holding up well even past 70,000 kilometres of use
Why not choose
- Several driver-assistance features that rivals at this price now offer, such as adaptive cruise control and lane assistance, are missing on the Fortuner entirely
- The factory sound system has been called out by owners as underwhelming for what the car costs
- Ride quality is firm and bad roads are felt clearly inside the cabin, something more than one owner has flagged as a compromise for its size
- The petrol engine returns poor real-world fuel economy, with owners reporting figures in the single digits in automatic guise
- Cost cutting shows up in some interior plastics despite the car's price
Our Recommendation For Most BuyersMajestor
The Majestor's case rests on being genuinely bigger, more powerful, and better equipped for off-road use than the Fortuner, with three locking differentials and ten terrain modes giving it hardware the Toyota's diesel range does not offer. Standard tyre pressure monitoring and a longer feature list add to the value case at a similar price point.
Buyers drawn to the extra space and equipment should factor in MG's thinner dealer network before committing, since a smaller brand's service reach matters over years of ownership more than a longer feature list does on day one. For buyers who want more space and more off-road hardware for similar money, and who are comfortable with a newer brand's smaller footprint, the Majestor is the more complete package on paper.
Fortuner
Choosing the Fortuner over a bigger, more powerful newcomer means choosing a known quantity. Toyota's after-sales reputation and the diesel engine's decade-plus durability record are not things a spec sheet can replicate, and long-term owners consistently confirm both. The trade-off is a car that is behind on features rivals now offer as standard, including driver-assistance tech, and a ride that owners describe as firm enough to feel on bad roads.
Buyers who value predictable running costs and strong resale over outright size or feature count should stay with the diesel automatic, which remains the most complete version of the car. Anyone tempted by the Majestor's extra space and off-road hardware should weigh that against Toyota's dealer reach and the diesel's long service history.
