JSW Motors is pivoting toward a high-tech, green-mobility strategy by introducing the Jetour T2 as its flagship independent product. While JSW currently operates in a joint venture with MG, the T2 represents a separate technology partnership with the Chinese automaker Chery, which owns the Jetour brand. The T2 i-DM will be one of the first mainstream plug-in hybrid SUVs in India, positioned to compete against premium rivals like the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, and Skoda Kodiaq. By choosing a PHEV over a pure EV or ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) model, JSW is targeting buyers who require long-range capability alongside the fuel efficiency of an electric drivetrain. The vehicle will undergo local assembly (CKD) to manage costs, though it is expected to sit in the ₹35 lakh to ₹45 lakh price bracket.

engine and performance

The Indian-spec T2 will exclusively use the "i-DM" (Intelligent Drive Model) plug-in hybrid powertrain. This system combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (156 hp / 220 Nm) with a dual-motor electric setup. Globally, the T2 i-DM is available in two main configurations: a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) version and an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) version. The FWD variant produces a combined output of approximately 380 hp and 610 Nm of torque, while the AWD variant, which adds a third motor to the rear axle, can push performance to 610 hp and 920 Nm.

The power is managed by a 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). Unlike traditional CVTs or torque converters, the DHT allows the vehicle to operate in multiple modes: pure electric, series hybrid (engine acts as a generator), or parallel hybrid (both engine and motors drive the wheels). The vehicle will feature a battery pack ranging from 26.7 kWh to 43.24 kWh depending on the trim. On a full charge, the 26.7 kWh battery provides a pure electric range of approximately 130 km (NEDC), allowing for zero-emission city commuting. The system supports DC fast charging, capable of taking the battery from 30% to 80% in about 30 minutes.

interior

Inside, the Jetour T2 moves away from its rugged exterior toward a minimalist, high-tech environment. The dashboard is centered around a 15.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen infotainment system, which serves as the primary hub for vehicle controls and media. This system is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chipset, ensuring fast processing speeds for the user interface and supporting over-the-air (OTA) updates. Complementing the central screen is a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster for the driver.

The cabin materials include a mix of synthetic leather, Alcantara finishes, and metal accents. Significant features expected for the Indian market include a 12-speaker Sony audio system, a 64-inch panoramic sunroof, and 128-color ambient lighting. The center console features a crystal-crafted gear selector and a dedicated wireless charging pad with cooling vents. While the T2 is sold as a 7-seater in some global markets (the "T2 L" version), the India-bound model will focus on the 5-seater configuration to provide class-leading legroom and a 580-liter boot capacity. Comfort features will likely include ventilated and heated front seats with memory functions for the driver.

exterior

The Jetour T2 is defined by a boxy, "hard-core" aesthetic that prioritizes road presence and off-road utility. Its dimensions are notable: it measures approximately 4,785mm in length, 2,006mm in width, and 1,880mm in height, with a 2,800mm wheelbase. This footprint makes it wider and taller than several established 7-seater SUVs in India, though JSW will likely position it as a spacious 5-seater. The exterior features vertical LED matrix headlights and a blocky front grille that will likely replace the "JETOUR" lettering with JSW branding.

From a functional standpoint, the T2 is built on a monocoque chassis but offers off-road specs comparable to ladder-frame vehicles. It has a ground clearance of 220mm, an approach angle of 28 degrees, a departure angle of 30 degrees, and a maximum wading depth of 700mm. The rear is characterized by a side-hinged tailgate featuring a square-shaped external spare wheel cover. Standard equipment for the Indian spec is expected to include 19-inch or 20-inch alloy wheels, roof rails capable of supporting heavy loads, and integrated side steps. The design focuses on high visibility and "rugged simplicity," utilizing straight lines and flared wheel arches to emphasize its off-road character.

safety

Safety for the Jetour T2 is built around a "Steel Cage" structure, with high-strength steel making up over 80% of the chassis. The vehicle is designed to meet 5-star safety ratings in global testing protocols. Standard safety hardware includes between 6 and 10 airbags (depending on the variant), electronic stability control (ESC), and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). One of the standout features is the 540-degree panoramic camera system, which provides a 360-degree view of the surroundings plus a "transparent chassis" view to help drivers navigate obstacles directly under the vehicle during off-roading.

The SUV is also equipped with a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite. Key active safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Blind Spot Detection (BSD). For off-road safety, the T2 includes Hill Descent Control and a "Smart Creep" mode, which maintains a steady low speed (between 7-15 km/h) on difficult terrain, allowing the driver to focus entirely on steering. These systems are integrated with the vehicle’s 7-X driving modes, which automatically calibrate the traction control and braking systems for surfaces like snow, mud, and sand.

pricing and features

The JSW Jetour T2 will enter the premium SUV segment, where its primary competition includes the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, and Jeep Meridian. While the T2 uses a monocoque frame rather than the ladder-frame construction of the Fortuner or Gloster, its dimensions and "hard-core" styling are intended to attract the same audience. By 2026, it will also face competition from upcoming lifestyle EVs like the Tata Sierra EV and the Mahindra XUV 7XO. Given its local assembly strategy and the cost of the PHEV powertrain, the Jetour T2 is expected to be priced between ₹35 lakh and ₹45 lakh (ex-showroom). This pricing would make it the most affordable high-performance plug-in hybrid in the Indian market, undercutting luxury-brand PHEVs while offering more tech than traditional diesel-powered rivals.

Jetour T2 Car FAQs

Jetour is a Chinese automotive brand launched in 2018. It is a subsidiary of the Chery Holding Group, one of China’s largest vehicle exporters. While it started as a product line under Chery, it became an independent brand in 2021, focusing on a "Travel+" strategy that targets adventure-seeking families and young professionals.
Jetour exclusively offers SUVs and Crossovers. Its lineup includes the rugged T-Series (like the T2 and T1), the urban-focused X-Series (X70, X70 Plus, X90), and the sporty Dashing. The brand operates in over 90 countries, with a massive presence in the Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia), Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. In India, it is entering through a partnership with JSW Motors.
The "special" factor is the combination of high-end tech and rugged styling at a mass-market price. Jetour vehicles often feature premium hardware usually found in luxury cars, such as Snapdragon 8155 chips, 15.6-inch screens, and Sony audio systems. They also offer extreme warranties, like the 10-year/1-million km engine warranty in international markets, and specific "camping-friendly" features like built-in drone controllers, external power outlets, and 540-degree "transparent chassis" cameras.
Visually, yes—they are widely considered "fast-follower" designs. The Jetour T2 is frequently criticized as a "budget Land Rover Defender" due to its near-identical boxy silhouette, vertical lights, and rear-mounted spare wheel. The Dashing draws clear inspiration from the Lamborghini Urus and Lotus Eletre. While the mechanical platforms and engines are proprietary to Chery, the exterior styling is intentionally designed to look like a luxury Western vehicle for a fraction of the cost.
