A heavily camouflaged test mule of the Chery Jaecoo J5 electric SUV has again been spotted, before its debut through JSW Motors tie-up with Chery, in the Indian market.

Here's what the design of the Jaecoo J5 test mule reveals:

The overall body proportions give off a boxy, upright look with a squared-off shape, with its roofline sloping a bit to the rear, but it doesn't fully translate into a typical coupe SUV.

The front is not featured in the spy shot, however taking the global model as a reference, expect a wide vertical-slat grille with Range Rover style “Jaecoo” badging, split headlights with integrated LEDs, and a wide black grille below (with a small fog lamp).

At the sides, only the flush door handles, and aero alloy wheels with a flat face are visible. Note that these wheels may change when launched. The global model meanwhile, features blacked-out pillars, giving the side body a floating roof effect, which can also be expected to come to the Indian-spec model.

Going at the rear, you can just make out the edges of the same slender, continuous LED taillight bar, along with a spoiler above the rear windshield, as found on the global model.

The interior design and features have not been revealed. For the powertrain, the global Jaecoo J5 is available with multiple options, including a 1.5L or 1.6L turbo petrol in some markets, hybrids, and EV models, but the Indian model is expected to be a pure EV.

Availability & Rivals

Chery Jaecoo J5 is expected to launch in India sometime later this year, possibly after Diwali. Once launched, it is expected to rival the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, and the upcoming Tata Sierra, at an expected ₹18 lakh to ₹22 lakh price bracket.

The test mules confirm JSW is serious about multiple EV models, such as the Jetour T2, which is expected to launch before, in October, followed by a range extender vehicle (REEV) in the same year, and next year - the iCar V23.

The vehicles will be assembled at a new JSW plant in Maharashtra, with initial production to use CKD kits, with localisation increasing later.
