Toyota Kirloskar Motor has introduced a safety-focused update to its popular MPV, the Rumion, making six airbags standard equipment on every trim. This enhancement comes alongside minor interior refinements and benefits from recent GST rate adjustments that have lowered prices by up to ₹49,000. The Rumion, a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, continues to target family buyers in the compact MPV segment with its spacious seven-seater layout and reliable powertrain.

The most significant change in this update is the addition of six airbags as standard across the entire Rumion lineup. Previously, the base S and mid-spec G variants were equipped with only dual front airbags, while the top V trim offered four. Now, all models include driver and passenger front airbags, side airbags for the front occupants, and curtain airbags for side-impact protection. This brings the Rumion in line with modern safety expectations in the MPV segment.

Other safety equipment remains consistent, including ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control (VSC), hill-hold assist, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. The top V variant also gains a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) for added vigilance.

Beyond safety, Toyota has made subtle tweaks to improve passenger comfort. Third-row occupants now benefit from dedicated AC vents, addressing a common feedback point for better airflow in the rear. The middle-row AC vents have been relocated from the ceiling to the floor console between the front seats, potentially offering more direct cooling.

Additionally, the second-row middle seat now includes a head restraint, enhancing support and safety for the center passenger during long journeys. The Maruti Ertiga recently underwent these changes, and the same has been carried over to the Rumion.

Things remain unchanged under the hood, with the 1.5-litre four-cylinder K15C petrol engine producing 103 hp and 137 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic.

A factory-fitted CNG kit is available only on the base S variant, detuned to 88 hp and 121 Nm. Fuel efficiency figures remain at around 20.5 km/l for petrol manual variants and 26.1 km/kg for CNG.

Key features carried over include a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on mid and top trims, keyless entry, and cruise control. The boot space offers 74 litres with all seats up, but is expandable to 803 litres with the third row folded.

Thanks to the recent revision in GST slabs for vehicles under ₹10 lakh, the Rumion's prices have been reduced, making it more competitive without compromising on the new safety additions. The updated ex-showroom prices range from ₹10.44 lakh to ₹13.62 lakh.

S CNG MT 11.35
S AT11.89
G MT11.56

This update reinforces the Rumion's value proposition as a safe, spacious, reasonably feature-packed, and economical family hauler, helping it take on rivals like the Maruti Ertiga and Kia Carens.

While the changes are incremental, the standard six-airbag setup addresses a key gap, potentially boosting its appeal in a safety-conscious market. Interested buyers can visit their nearest Toyota dealerships to explore the revised lineup, with deliveries already underway
