Tata Motors has finally introduced petrol power to its popular Harrier and Safari SUVs. These models have been available only with a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine since their launch. The new petrol option marks a big shift for the brand.
A New Heart
The heart of this update is Tata's new in-house 1.5-litre t-GDI Hyperion engine, debuting in the recently launched Sierra. However, this engine has been tuned for better performance in the Harrier and Safari, now delivering 168 BHP and 280 Nm of torque - up from the 158 BHP and 255 Nm in the Sierra.
Both SUVs can be had with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
Subtle Updates to Keep Things Fresh

Tata has not made big changes to the design or core features, focusing on small touches to refresh their appeal. The highlight is the new Nitro Crimson paint shade. Inside, new upholstery shades add a touch of luxury.
Another handy addition is the digital IRVM, or inside rear-view mirror, offering a clear, distortion-free view with a digital display. All other features carry over from the diesel models, including the spacious cabins, advanced safety kits, and tech like the large touchscreen infotainment system.
The variant lineup stays the same as the diesel versions. For the Harrier, these include Smart, Pure X, Pure X Dark, Adventure, Adventure X Dark, Fearless X, Fearless X Dark, and Fearless X Stealth.
The Safari comes in Smart, Pure, Pure X Dark, Adventure X+, Adventure X+ Dark, Accomplished X, Accomplished X+, Accomplished X+ Dark, Accomplished X Stealth, Accomplished X Ultra, and Accomplished X Red Dark.
Tata Harrier and Safari Petrol Prices
Tata has not announced prices yet, but we expect the petrol Harrier and Safari to retail at least ₹1 lakh lower than their diesel counterparts in each trim.
Both SUVs are now perfect for places like Delhi NCR, where diesel cars just have a 10-year validity period.
The Harrier and Safari petrol will go head-to-head with models like the Hyundai Creta and Alcazar, Kia Seltos, MG Hector and Hector Plus, Mahindra Scorpio N, Thar Roxx, and XUV 7XO. All these rivals pack turbo petrol engines and target similar buyers.
