As expected, Maruti dominated the charts, capturing a huge 40%+ share of the domestic car market this month, despite a 13% decline compared to January 2025. Hyundai holds the second spot, while Mahindra has fought hard to secure the third position, driven by the rising demand for SUVs.
Tata Motors and Toyota complete the top five, with Kia climbing to second in growth, posting a massive 26% year-on-year increase. Honda, on the other hand, was the biggest loser, seeing a 29% decline compared to last year.

Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki recorded 183,633 registrations in January 2026, around 13 percent lower than the 211,074 units retailed in January 2025. This decline mainly reflects the correction after last year’s registration backlog boosted figures artificially. Even so, Maruti continues to dominate the market with roughly 42 percent share, driven largely by the Wagon R, Swift, and Brezza.
Hyundai
Hyundai registered 59,587 units in January 2026, almost unchanged from the 59,858 units recorded a year earlier. This flat performance underlines Hyundai’s stable demand despite broader market normalisation. The Creta remained the brand’s biggest contributor by a wide margin.
Mahindra
Mahindra posted 54,733 registrations in January 2026, up 5.4 percent from 51,914 units in January 2025. It was among the few manufacturers to deliver year-on-year growth. The Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N continued to anchor volumes, with the XUV700 and Thar adding steady support.

Tata Motors
Tata Motors passenger vehicles registered 54,258 units in January 2026, up from 53,884 units in the same month last year. Within the ICE portfolio, the Nexon and Punch were the brand’s best-selling models, driving the bulk of volumes and reinforcing Tata’s strong presence in the compact and entry-SUV space.
Toyota
Toyota recorded 31,595 registrations in January 2026, a solid 9.3 percent increase over January 2025. Growth was driven almost entirely by the Innova range, with the Crysta and Hycross continuing to dominate the MPV segment.
Kia
Kia delivered one of the strongest performances of the month with 28,047 registrations, up 26.5 percent from 22,169 units a year earlier. The Sonet and Seltos continued to pull volumes, with the Sonet playing a particularly important role.
Skoda
Skoda registered 9,185 units in January 2026. Since Skoda and Volkswagen were combined at around 9,140 units in January 2025, the standalone figure indicates largely stable performance. The Kushaq and Slavia remained Skoda’s mainstays.
MG Motor
MG Motor registered 5,507 units, down 13.5 percent from 6,363 units in January 2025. Demand has softened slightly after the brand’s earlier momentum. The Hector and Astor continued to be MG’s core sellers.
Honda
Honda saw registrations fall sharply to 5,402 units in January 2026, a 29.7 percent decline from 7,687 units a year earlier. Limited SUV options continue to hurt volumes. The City remained Honda’s top seller, followed by the Elevate.

Renault
Renault posted 4,629 registrations in January 2026, up 18 percent from 3,924 units in January 2025. The recovery was driven by value-focused products, with the Kiger and Triber accounting for most sales.
Nissan
Nissan registered 2,294 units in January 2026, down 9.4 percent from 2,532 units last year. Volumes remain low, with the Magnite contributing almost all of the brand’s sales.
Stellantis India
Stellantis India registered 1,143 units, marginally higher than the estimated 1,122 units in January 2025. The Jeep Compass remained the primary contributor, while Citroën models added smaller numbers.
Force Motors
Force Motors recorded 535 registrations in January 2026, down 36.5 percent from 843 units a year earlier. Sales remain concentrated around the Gurkha off-road SUV.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen registered just 55 units in January 2026. With the brand grouped with Skoda in the 2025 data, the low standalone figure highlights how limited Volkswagen’s volumes currently are. The Virtus and Taigun accounted for most sales.
Isuzu
Isuzu registered 52 units in January 2026, continuing as a very low-volume niche brand focused primarily on the V-Cross pick-up.
