While companies like Honda are scaling back their EV plans and brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are witnessing slower-than-expected adoption, BMW is doubling down on electrification. The new Neue Klasse-based BMW i3 is a ground-up electric vehicle that not only looks striking but also could push other carmakers to follow suit.

Looks Great IMHO

From a distance the i3 reads unmistakably as a BMW 3 Series, but with a contemporary twist. The silhouette follows a "2.5-box" concept: long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a greenhouse that slopes into the rear for a purposeful, athletic stance.

Prominent, flared wheel arches and a low character line bring the visual center closer to the road, giving the car a planted look that hints at sporty handling.

Up front, BMW’s grille and twin-eye headlights merge into a single geometry-and-light element, creating a broad, cohesive face with a horizontal light signature that stretches nearly across the width of the car.

Optional lighting packages add animated welcome sequences and deeper contour illumination to personalise the first impression.

The rear is equally modern: wide, horizontally aligned tail lights with a three-dimensional signature fan out into the shoulders, reinforcing width and presence.

Eleven paint finishes will be available at launch, including a new M Le Castellet Blue metallic that emphasizes the car’s athletic lines.

Great interior as expected

Step inside and the i3 moves away from purely tech-centric interiors toward a warmer, humanised cockpit. The Free-Cut central display sits angled toward the driver and flows into the door panels, creating an enveloping wrap-around feel.

A standard panoramic roof with climate comfort glass and large windows keeps the cabin feeling open and bright.

Optional M Sport seats and multifunction units are available for buyers who want a firmer, more track-ready feel. Material choices reflect sustainability goals: vegan leather options, Merino for premium trims, and textiles made from recycled material for headliners and pillar trims.

The centre console includes handy inductive charging, neatly integrated physical controls for quick access, and a storage area that keeps everyday items within reach.

What sets the i3 apart is the blend of physical and digital controls. The BMW Panoramic Vision projects information across a coated lower windscreen area that stretches A-pillar to A-pillar.

Important driving data appears in the driver’s line of sight while the central and right-hand zones can be personalised for passengers.

An optional 3D head-up display adds layered animations for navigation cues and assistance features, improving spatial perception when you need it most.

Wraparound display looks sick!

At the heart of the i3’s interface is BMW Panoramic iDrive running on BMW Operating System X. The 17.9-inch Free-Cut central display uses matrix backlight technology for crisp legibility and supports drag-and-drop widgets into the Panoramic Vision for quick access.

Up to seven personal BMW ID profiles can be stored, with a welcome greeting and personal layout appearing as soon as a driver logs in.

Voice control is more natural than before. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant uses multimodal interaction and is augmented by Amazon’s Alexa+ AI technology to deliver richer, more dialogue-oriented voice interactions and access to cloud services and media.

Physical controls follow the "Shy Tech" principle: buttons only illuminate when active, reducing visual clutter while maintaining tactile feedback and safety.

The BMW Digital Key Plus supports ultra-wideband and Bluetooth, turning modern smartphones and smartwatches into high-security keys that can be shared securely with others.

Gen6 eDrive and Heart of Joy

Under the skin the i3 showcases BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. The launch i3 50 xDrive pairs two motors - an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) on the rear axle and an asynchronous motor (ASM) on the front - producing a combined 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque.

BMW projects an EPA-based range of up to 440 miles, a considerable step forward for an electric sedan.

Controlling all of this is the "Heart of Joy", the high-performance computer that manages drive, brakes, some steering functions, and recuperation. It responds about ten times faster than previous systems, giving the car a precise, assured feel on corner entries and exits. BMW also highlights a Soft-Stop function that ensures smooth, jerk-free decelerations for a more refined braking feel.

The i3 supports an 800-volt architecture and DC charging rates up to 400 kW, which dramatically shortens top-up times when using high-power stations. BMW includes intelligent features such as automatic battery pre-conditioning for DC charging, so the pack reaches optimal temperature before you arrive at a fast charger.

Bidirectional charging is built in. The i3 offers Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality for camping or mobile appliances, Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) to act as a home battery when paired with compatible wallboxes and solar systems, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) to feed energy back into the grid under managed conditions.

The i3 offers a suite of assistance systems that stress interaction rather than takeover. BMW Symbiotic Drive and optional Level 2+ features help with speed, distance, and lane keeping, and the system infers driver intent from steering and gaze to provide subtle, supportive interventions. The emphasis is on keeping the driver engaged while reducing workload at the right moments.

Over-the-air updates and a zonal electronics architecture mean the car can evolve after purchase, adding new features and refining performance thanks to a software-defined vehicle approach.

Production ramps in Munich in 2026 and the i3 will be available in multiple trims, giving buyers a wide range of personalization and performance choices as BMW brings the Neue Klasse into everyday life.
