The Coupe SUV Era Has Begun

When it comes to exterior design, both the Tata Curvv EV and Mahindra BE 6e are insanely radical with head-turning road presence and borrow design cues from their bigger siblings like XUV 700 and Harrier.

The in-your-face design of both EVs is not timeless by a long shot but will bode well in their hard and fast life cycles. Neither Mahindra nor Toyota has published any substantial aerodynamic reasoning behind the styling of their halo EV cars, so we will assume that pure looks are the only reason behind the razor-sharp aesthetics of the BE 6e and Curvv

The Tata Curvv EV carries the same sharp and modern silhouette as the Curvv ICE model but adds distinctive touches like a closed-off grille, vertical bumper elements, and aero dynamic-looking 18-inch alloy wheels. In real life looks way too puny for an SUV this size.

The BE 6e on the other hand has 20-inch wheels available as an option for those who value aesthetics above range. Both Curvv and BE 6e come with flushed door handles and dual-tone paint options.

The BE 6e has a pretty massive DRL signature which surrounds the entirety of it slower and makes the front end look like a giant black gaping hole, menacing to say the least.  Mahindra says there is a clever aero channel hidden behind that blacked-out fascia that controls the airflow over BE 6e's massive body.

While the side profile screams coupe SUV from every angle, the BE 6e has way more slant than the Curvv. The latter inclines towards your everyday boxy car shape, albeit with 20 percent more boot space at 500 liters.

The rear end of both EVs is dominated by LED light strips, with BE 6e going for the more conventional setup as opposed to Curvv’s light bar approach.

Now looking at the spec sheet we can see that the BE 63 beats Curvv when it comes to every exterior measurement except, height, which could mean a few more kilometers in our upcoming range test.

Most notably the wheelbase of BE 6e is 2775 mm, 215 mm bigger than Curvv’s, which means more interior space for Bhature-loving Indians like me and better high-speed manners. Do note that Mahindra has created a dedicated platform for its EVs called INGLO which could stand for Indian ingenuity and Global excellence.

They have mounted the battery pack down low enabling a flat floor and low center of gravity. The architecture also comes with Semi-Active suspension and is bigger than Curvv’s jugadu platform, which is a revised version of its existing ICE platform.

Both the Curvv EV and the BE 6e offer future interiors crammed with ADAS tech and touchscreens larger than the laptop I am typing this on. The interior of the Curvv EV is way more cohesive and well thought out than the BE 6e’s afterthought of design.

The top-spec Curvv offers you a dual-tone white and grey color scheme with a 12.3-inch floating touchscreen and a well-integrated 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster on higher trims. The Accomplished onward models come with leatherette upholstery, split seats, and a panoramic sunroof. For reference here is what the top-spec 22 lakh Tata Curvv EV Empowered+ A has

  • 9-speaker JBL audio
  • Powered tailgate
  • ADAS features
  • Ventilated front seats
  • 18-inch wheels
  • 360-degree camera
  • 12.3-inch floating touchscreen by Harman
  • split seats

The best part about Curvv’s interior is that coming from a petrol-based car you are not going to feel alienated fiddling around with controls and whatnot. Tata’s designers have done an excellent job is blending old-school ergonomics with an interior befitting an EV. I am not sure about the white leather tho, unless you also own a dry cleaning shop.

The Mahindra’s BE 6e interior is well, putting it mildly, intimidating. The Ferrari Roma-inspired cockpit is a blessing for a future Introvert/EV enthusiast. You kind of get your own space, best for boundary lovers. But those dual 12.3-inch touchscreens look like they were fixed in post using a Fevi Kwik. Completely out of vibe and not at all befitting a 19 lakh (base model) Coupe SUV. The same goes for the cheap-looking steering wheel which looks like something they took from the leftover Bolero surplus.

One thing that I am glad Mahindra did was equip BE 6e with an insane amount of onboard processing power It has 24 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 processor. These will come in handy when the full capabilities of ADAS are deployed and for future OTA updates. Recently, I saw an impressive demonstration of its auto park feature further proving its serious hardware chops. Feature-wise BE 6e has Curvv beat with some truly impressive niceties.

The top-spec variants of BE 6e will get some sweet features like-

  • panoramic roof with ambient lights
  • 1400-watt Dolby speaker system
  • Level 2 Autonomous driving tech
  • driver’s seat with memory function
  • 5G suite
  • In car camera
  • BYOD ( you can hook up your own iPad and stream Netflix !)

We are all familiar with the classic question, Kitna deti hai? EVs are no exception and the same rules apply.

The Curvv EV offers two battery options sourced from California-based Octillion while Mahindra has taken the Chinese approach as it uses the BYD Blade battery. Both are based on cheap and reliable LFP chemistries

The 45kWh unit and 55kWh battery packs in Curvv EV are mated to a single RWD motor The 45kWh version produces 150hp, while the 55kWh version cranks out 167hp. The 55kWh variant can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, while the 45kWh variant takes slightly longer at 9 seconds.

The Curvv EV offers a range of up to 502 km with the 45kWh battery and 585 km with the 55kWh battery (based on the MIDC cycle). Tata claims the range under real-world conditions (C75 standard) to be between 330 and 425 km. Curvv comes with a 7.2 kWh onboard charger without any additional cost and charges 10-100 percent in 8 hours for the 55 and 6.5 hours for the 45 kWh variants. Hook it up with a fast charger and it will replenish 10 to 80 percent in just 40 minutes.

Mahindra really, really, really wanted to stay ahead of the Curvv (pun intended). Once aging, they ruined Curvv buyers with their super awesome battery tech and power.

The BE 6e comes with two battery options: a 59kWh unit and a larger 79kWh unit. The 59kWh battery produces 228hp, while the 79kWh battery generates a more powerful 281hp.

Mahindra claims a 0-100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds for the higher-spec model. In terms of range, the 79kWh variant offers an ARAI-certified range of 682 km, while the 59kWh variant provides 535 km.

This is quite impressive when compared to the Curvv EV. Mahindra claims that the BE 6e’s large battery can charge 20-80% in just 20 minutes using a 175kW DC fast charger. That's half the time Curvv can manage, gotta be honest, Mahindra said bye-bye to TATA in more than one way here.

Sadly Mahindra wants you to pay extra for onboard charging which comes in 7.2 and 11 kWh flavors.

The Mahindra BE 6e starts at Rs 18.90 lakh for the base 59kWh Pack One variant. More than Curvv’s 17.50 lakh asking price. But Mahindra does give you a larger 59 kWh battery pack and has justified its asking price to an extent, especially when you consider its lifetime battery warranty, another classic concern for us Indians.
