Tata Motors has begun road testing the next-generation Nexon, internally known as Project Garud.
A heavily camouflaged prototype was recently spotted, giving the first clear signs of major design changes ahead of its expected 2027 launch.
Although the overall proportions still look familiar, the new model appears noticeably different in profile. The C-pillar is more upright and the rear doors look completely redesigned. The A-pillar also looks sharper and more angular, while the rear windscreen appears flatter.
A redesigned tailgate and larger roof spoiler are also visible under the camouflage. The roofline is less sloping than the current coupe-like design, which should improve rear-seat headroom and give the SUV a more balanced, boxier stance.

These changes suggest deeper structural updates rather than a simple facelift. Tata is also expected to heavily modify the current Nexon's X1 platform or move to a new platform altogether.
The test mule still carries temporary taillights and current-generation alloy wheels, indicating it is an early development vehicle.
The next-gen Nexon is expected to continue with petrol and CNG options, with flex-fuel compatibility being a possibility. The future of the diesel engine remains uncertain. A new-generation Nexon EV is also planned, though it is expected to arrive later.

The cabin is likely to receive a full layout redesign with updated screens and more features.
With the current Nexon already a strong seller, the 2027 model will need to stay competitive against rivals like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Maruti Brezza and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
More details should emerge as testing continues.
