2026 Mahindra Thar OG Every Variant Explained

The Mahindra Thar OG has arrived as the successor to the 3-door Thar which launched in 2020, bringing more power, new tech and a wider range of equipment. It is spread across the AXT, LXT and ZXT variants, priced from Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh ex-showroom.

There are three engines to choose from. The 1.5-litre diesel makes 118.5 hp and 300 Nm, while the 2.2-litre diesel produces 152 hp and 330 Nm. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol also makes 330 Nm, with 161.8 hp on tap.

Manual and automatic transmissions are both offered, with RWD standard across the range and 4WD available from LXT upwards on the 2.2-litre diesel and turbo petrol engines.

Safety tops out at 6 airbags including four HPTS units, with all-disc brakes arriving only on ZXT. The Thar OG's most direct rival in the market remains the Force Gurkha.

Thar OG AXT

AXT is locked to the 1.5-litre diesel, 6-speed manual and RWD only, and comes with no automatic, no 4WD, no petrol. You still get the essentials such as the R18 steel wheels, halogen headlamps, dual airbags, ESP with rollover mitigation, roll cage, rear AC vents and push-button start.

At this price it is Mahindra’s simplest way to put a real Thar badge in a first-time buyer’s hands. But without 4WD, the modest 300 Nm diesel and rear drum brakes, it feels more like a tough city runabout than the off-roader most people picture.

Unless the gap to LXT is a hard budget limit, AXT is hard to recommend on its own.

Thar OG LXT

LXT is where the Thar OG range properly opens up. All three engines, RWD or 4WD, and manual or automatic become available. Electronic Locking Differential and Terrain Modes also arrive, but only on the 4WD versions.

Cabin-wise you move to R18 alloys, the 26.03 cm touchscreen with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, colour MID, cruise control, embossed fabric seats and power ORVMs, enough to feel clearly different from AXT.

If you want occasional capability rather than full-time off-roading, the RWD mHawk or mStallion LXT is the cheapest route into a much usable Thar. For buyers who will actually use the locking differential and terrain modes, the 4WD mHawk manual is the smart pick.

Thar OG ZXT

ZXT is the only variant with the new R19 alloys, LED headlamps with DRL, LED fog lamps with cornering, all-disc brakes and Frequency Dependent Damping. The real step-up, though, is safety, as now it includes six airbags (including the four HPTS units), TPMS, rear camera and front parking sensors, none of which appear lower down.

For anyone planning real off-road use in the 4WD mHawk or mStallion combination, ZXT is worth the premium purely for the FDD damping and all-disc brakes. For someone who mostly wants the badge and RWD manoeuvrability, the extra spend over LXT is harder to justify unless the additional safety kit is the deciding factor.

What's Common Across All Mahindra Thar OG Variants?

All Thar OG variants use the M_Glyde 4G platform with double-wishbone front suspension, PENTALINK rear axle with Watt’s Link and DAVINCI damping. The ZXT gets the upgraded Frequency Dependent Damping.

Dimensions wise, it measures 3995 mm long, 1870 mm wide with a 2450 mm wheelbase and 232 mm ground clearance. It seats four and offer a 40-degree approach angle and 650 mm water-wading depth.

Standard kit includes electric power steering, push-button start, roll cage, ESP with rollover mitigation, ISOFIX, PODS and front disc brakes.
