Engine, Performance and Mileage

At the heart of the Himalayan 450 lies the all-new Sherpa 452 engine—Royal Enfield’s first liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder. This 452cc unit produces 40.02 PS at 8,000 rpm and 40 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm, with 90% of the torque available from as low as 3,000 rpm. This gives it excellent grunt in lower revs, perfect for hill climbs, forest trails, and city crawling alike.

The engine is paired with a smooth 6-speed gearbox featuring a slip-and-assist clutch for seamless downshifts. There’s good refinement up to 100 kmph, but vibrations start creeping in once you push past 110. With a real-world fuel economy of around 30 kmpl and a 17-litre tank, it can easily go over 500 km on a single fill. Ride modes—Eco and Performance—allow you to tweak throttle responsiveness, with Eco mode clearly tuned for efficiency during long hauls.

Design

The Himalayan 450 blends old-school ruggedness with modern adventure aesthetics. It’s built around a steel twin-spar frame, incorporating a high-mounted airbox that narrows the seat section, making it easier for riders to reach the ground. Up front, a circular LED headlamp, integrated tail indicators, and a clean tail section underscore the minimalist ADV design language.

The 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wire-spoke wheels come wrapped in dual-purpose CEAT tires, enhancing its trail-ready credentials. Paint schemes like Kaza Brown, Slate Poppy Blue, Kamet White, and Hanle Black give the bike both subdued and loud options depending on your taste. Functional elements like crash guards and fork gaiters add a layer of utility, while a 4-inch round TFT display with Google Maps integration brings tech to the forefront. The joystick controller, however, isn’t the most intuitive to operate, especially with gloves on.

competition

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 goes head-to-head with the KTM 390 Adventure, Triumph Scrambler 400X, and Yezdi Adventure. Among them, the KTM 390 Adventure offers a more powerful 45 PS engine and advanced electronics but comes at a premium price of ₹3.68 lakh. The Triumph Scrambler 400X delivers similar output but leans toward street performance with alloy wheels and lower ground clearance, though it’s slightly more affordable.

Meanwhile, the Yezdi Adventure is the most budget-friendly option at ₹2.10 lakh, but its 334cc engine lacks the refinement and torque of the Himalayan. Priced between ₹2.85 lakh and ₹2.98 lakh, the Himalayan 450 strikes a sweet spot between capability and value, particularly for riders focused on real-world off-road use.

final verdict

With the Himalayan 450, Royal Enfield has raised the bar for entry-level adventure motorcycles in India. It’s a proper upgrade from the previous-gen model, offering better off-road performance, improved highway stability, and far more modern tech. The Sherpa engine is refined and torquey, the Showa suspension elevates ride quality, and the bike’s rugged build gives you confidence on any terrain.

That said, it’s not perfect. There are noticeable vibrations at higher speeds, the lack of traction control feels like a miss in 2025, and the stock tires will need upgrading if you’re serious about trail riding. But for the price, few ADVs can match its combination of power, comfort, and versatility. Whether you’re a weekend explorer or a long-haul tourer, the Himalayan 450 offers a solid, dependable platform to build your adventures on.
