Yamaha Re-Registers YZF-R2 Trademark In US After 5 Years

Yamaha has re-registered the 'YZF-R2' trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), after first filing the name in 2021 alongside the YZF-R9.

That said, YZF-R2 name has also been trademarked in India, which makes the case more interesting, as protection in multiple markets suggests Yamaha may be keeping the option open for a smaller-capacity R-series model.

In the United States, if produced, the YZF-R2 could sit below the 42 bhp R3 and above the YZF-R15, targeting riders looking for a lightweight, affordable sportbike. It is expected to use a larger-capacity version of the R15's 155cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, possibly around the 200cc mark.

Expected output could be around 24.6 bhp and 19 Nm, compared with the R15’s 18.1 bhp and 14.2 Nm.

India case wise, Yamaha currently has no bike between the R15 and its bigger exports, leaving the 200cc segment entirely to the KTM RC200 and Hero Karizma XMR 210, against which the R2 should compete against.

An India launch is expected around the 2026 festive season or early 2027, with pricing likely between ₹2 lakh and ₹2.20 lakh, ex-showroom.
