Taking a major step towards improving road safety, the Government of India is set to make ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) mandatory on all two wheelers sold in the country starting January 2026.
With entry-level bikes and scooters contributing for up to 75% of the market, this is a positive move. Current regulations only mandate ABS on two wheelers with an engine capacity of 125cc or above.
What is ABS and what does it do?
ABS or Anti-lock Braking System is a technology that prevents the wheels of a vehicle from locking up under braking, reducing the risk of skidding and potential accidents.
The presence of ABS helps riders/drivers steer and change the direction of the vehicle to avoid obstacles while braking. ABS can be extremely useful on roads with low grip conditions.
Expected Price Changes
While the safety benefits of ABS are well known, this mandate will surely see an inflation in the prices of entry-level bikes and scooters, due to higher production costs. Expect prices to rise by Rs 2,500 to 5,000 per vehicle.
However, it would be unfair to complain about the price rise, as one’s personal safety is paramount, and much more valuable than money.
“Two wheelers account for 44% of road fatalities in India. Hence, improving their safety is a major priority and introduction of ABS for all two-wheelers was much needed,”
KK Kapila, President Emeritus at International Road Federation stated.
According to some reports, in addition to ABS, the Government will also mandate the provision of two helmets on the purchase of a two-wheeler. Current regulations only mandate a single helmet - for the rider.
