The Ignis uses a 1.2-litre four-cylinder VVT petrol engine, which produces 83 hp at 6000 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm. The engine drives the front wheels through a 5-speed manual or automated manual transmission (AMT).

ARAI certified fuel efficiency stands at 20.89 kmpl for both the 5-speed manual and AMT variants, supported by a fuel tank of 32 litres capacity.

The Ignis seats five within a cabin featuring a layered, dual-tone dashboard. The tilt steering wheel gets audio and calling buttons on higher trims, while the instrument cluster is a semi-digital screen.

Meanwhile, centered in the dash is a 7-inch touchscreen that supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, USB, and Bluetooth.

Seating wise, the front seats include driver height adjustment, while the rear bench provides seating space for two adults with available knee room and headroom

This rear seating also includes adjustable headrests and a 60:40 split option, complemented by large door pockets and map pockets for storage.

Lastly, the boot measures 260 litres with the parcel tray in place.

The Ignis measures 3700 mm in length, 1690 mm in width, and 1595 mm in height over a 2435 mm wheelbase, with a ground clearance of 180 mm. The front profile gets a wide grille flanked by projector headlamps on top trims and fog lamps with chrome surrounds.

Along the sides, the design is highlighted by wheel arches, roof rails, and black lower cladding, riding on 15-inch alloy wheels shod with 175/65 R15 tyres. These compact proportions allow for a turning radius of 4.7 metres.

The boxy silhouette is completed at the rear with wrap-around tail lamps and a high-mounted stop lamp.

Meanwhile, practicality is maintained through a rear wiper and washer that aid visibility.

Built under the NEXA Safety Shield programme, the Ignis provides dual front airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and front seatbelt pretensioners equipped with force limiters.

Other features include ABS with EBD and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP). These are supported by rear parking sensors, rear seatbelt reminders, a high-speed warning alert, and an engine immobiliser, while Hill Hold Assist is also available, only on AMT models.

As for crash testing, the Ignis carries a low 1-star Global NCAP rating from its crash test in 2022, scoring only 16.48 out of 48 in adult protection and 3.86 out of 49 in child protection.

The Ignis has two close rivals in its segment, namely the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter.

The Punch stands out with a higher ground clearance (187-193 mm unladen) compared to the Ignis’ 180 mm. It also offers a more pronounced SUV stance, larger overall dimensions, and a stronger emphasis on structural safety. In contrast, the Ignis benefits from a lighter kerb weight, contributing to its handling and superior claimed fuel efficiency of 20.89 kmpl.

The Exter provides a larger boot space of 391 litres versus the Ignis’ more modest 260 litres. It also includes an additional factory-fitted CNG powertrain option. The Ignis counters these with its distinctive boxy, compact footprint, and lighter overall kerb weight, holding an advantage in everyday manoeuvrability and ease of parking in congested urban environments.
