The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that it will end the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for all new FASTag issuances for cars, jeeps, and vans from February 1, 2026. This move aims to reduce the delays and inconvenience many road users faced due to post-activation KYV checks.

Under the updated rule, motorists will no longer need to complete the KYV step after receiving a new FASTag in the car, jeep, or van category. The requirement has been removed to make the FASTag system more user-friendly and efficient.

For FASTags already issued to vehicles in this category, the KYV process will not be routinely required either. It will only be carried out if specific issues or complaints arise, such as loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or suspected misuse.

To ensure accuracy and compliance, NHAI has strengthened vehicle verification before activation. Banks issuing FASTags must now complete mandatory checks using the VAHAN database before activating the tag. If vehicle details are not available in VAHAN, banks will verify information using the registration certificate (RC) before activation.

These changes are part of NHAI’s ongoing efforts to simplify the FASTag process, reduce follow-ups, and improve the overall experience for highway users.

Important note - KYV will be needed in scenarios like incorrect issuance, misuse or loose FASTags.

What is KYV?

KYV stands for Know Your Vehicle. It is a verification process introduced by NHAI for new FASTag issuances. Under KYV, vehicle details are checked against official records to confirm ownership and ensure the FASTag is linked to the correct car, jeep, or van.

Why was KYV required?

KYV was meant to prevent fraudulent FASTag issuance, incorrect activations, or misuse. It helped authorities verify vehicle details before enabling electronic toll payments.

What is changing from February 1, 2026?

From February 1, 2026, NHAI will discontinue the mandatory KYV process for all new FASTag issuances for cars, jeeps, and vans. This means owners will no longer have to complete KYV after receiving a new FASTag, making the process faster and more convenient.

Will existing FASTag holders be affected?

No. Vehicles that already have a FASTag will not need to complete KYV routinely. Verification will only occur in cases of issues such as loose FASTags, wrong issuance, or suspected misuse.

How will vehicle verification work now?

Banks issuing FASTags will now verify vehicle details using the VAHAN database before activation. If VAHAN does not have the necessary information, banks can check using the vehicle’s registration certificate (RC).

Why is NHAI removing KYV?

NHAI aims to simplify the FASTag issuance process, reduce delays, and improve the user experience on highways. The pre-activation checks through VAHAN are considered sufficient for security
