The December 2025 sales chart highlights a massive year-end push by Maruti Suzuki, which secured seven out of the top ten positions. The Maruti Baleno emerged as the top seller with a remarkable 22,108 units, representing a 143% year-on-year growth.
This surge is likely driven by aggressive year-end clearing of 2025 inventory at Nexa dealerships, combined with a potential mid-life update or a shift in buyer preference toward premium hatchbacks that offer high fuel efficiency (CNG variants) amid fluctuating fuel prices. The Baleno's dominance suggests that urban buyers are prioritizing value-for-money premium features over the higher cost of mid-size SUVs.
The absence of the Hyundai Creta from the top ten is a significant outlier but can be explained by strategic industry behavior.
December is traditionally a "de-stocking" month where manufacturers reduce inventory to make room for the new model year. Hyundai likely prioritized clearing older stock of smaller models or faced a planned production shutdown for maintenance. Additionally, cars like the Maruti Fronx and Tata Nexon are cannibalizing the mid-size SUV segment; their lower price points and high-tech features attract buyers who might have previously opted for a base-trim Creta.
Furthermore, the data shows a clear preference for the "SUV-esque" bodystyle, with 6 out of 10 cars being SUVs or MUVs. While the Wagon R saw a 16% decline, it likely lost ground to the Swift (80% growth) and Fronx, as consumers migrate toward more aspirational designs.
