Toyota Just Refreshed the Hilux. Where Is Mahindra's Answer?

Toyota gave India's only proper lifestyle pickup a fresh face this week, and the timing could not have been more pointed. The 2026 Hilux facelift landed on July 28 at Rs 31.99 lakh (ex-showroom), bringing a new 4x2 automatic variant, a reworked cabin and a longer feature list to a truck that has had this segment largely to itself.

Mahindra, meanwhile, has spent the better part of three years testing a Scorpio-based pickup that everyone can see coming but nobody can actually buy yet.

The question the timing raises is a fair one: with Toyota doubling down on this segment, does Mahindra finally bring its pickup to India, or does the Scorpio pickup remains in development hell far longer than anyone would expect?

So Where Does Mahindra's Pickup Stand?

Mahindra has not been shy about wanting in on this segment. The company showcased its Global Pik Up concept back in 2023 at an event in South Africa, built on the Scorpio N, and has confirmed since then that a production version is coming. What has followed is nearly three years of spy shots, first of a single-cab layout with a long cargo bed, and more recently a dual-cab version that looks far better suited to how Indian buyers actually use these trucks. Internally, the project has carried the codename Z121, and more recent reports refer to the production version as the Vision SXT, built on Mahindra's new NU_IQ platform with support for ICE, hybrid and even EV powertrains.

On paper, the pickup borrows the Scorpio N's face, its six-slot grille, LED headlamps and Twin Peaks badge, though later test mules suggest Mahindra is tweaking the styling rather than doing a straight carryover. Expect an updated version of the 2.2-litre diesel to do the work under the hood, along with a features list that could include Level 2 ADAS, semi-automatic parking and multiple terrain modes.

Here is where the timing gets interesting, though. The most recent reporting suggests Mahindra's India launch has slipped from the "sometime in 2026" window that circulated through most of last year to a global debut in early 2027, with India likely following the international rollout rather than leading it. That is a meaningfully different picture from where things stood even a few months ago, when 2026 still looked realistic.

Why the Gap Matters

Toyota is not just refreshing a pickup for the sake of it. Lifestyle pickups have historically been a tough sell in India, capable machines that never quite cracked the sales charts the way SUVs did, but Toyota clearly believes there is a real audience willing to pay for one done properly, hence the more accessible 4x2 automatic variant aimed at widening the buyer base beyond hardcore off-roaders. If Mahindra's pickup really doesn't land until 2027, Toyota gets a clear run at this segment through what should otherwise have been Mahindra's window to compete, at a price point Mahindra was expected to undercut by a fair margin.

It is also worth noting Mahindra has plenty else on its plate through the rest of 2026. The Scorpio N facelift itself is expected around Independence Day, likely August 14 or 15, bringing a panoramic sunroof and revised dashboard to the SUV that the pickup is meant to be based on. It would not be unusual for Mahindra to want that facelift settled and in the market before turning its full attention to the pickup derivative.

What We Don't Know Yet

Mahindra has not put out an official India launch date for the pickup, and pricing remains speculative, with most estimates pointing to a starting price north of Rs 25 lakh, which would still undercut the new Hilux by a reasonable margin.

Whether the India-spec truck launches alongside the global debut or trails it by several months is also unconfirmed at this stage.

The only thing we can say for certain that lands a bit in Mahindra's favour is that maybe they are prioritising the development of the Vision concept SUVs first before finally pushing the Scorpio N-based truck into production for good.

They can take their time, no rush, but the end product should be just as impressive as the rest of their rugged, powerful, and ever in-demand portfolio of SUVs.
