Isuzu V-Cross

Isuzu has just updated the V-Cross for 2026, now offering it exclusively with a 4x4 drivetrain.
It is powered by a 1.9-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 163 bhp and 360 Nm of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, along with shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive and a rear differential lock.
The V-Cross measures roughly 5,295 mm in length, has a 3,095 mm wheelbase, and offers 225 mm of ground clearance. Its cargo bed measures about 1,485 mm by 1,530 mm and supports a payload of 170 to 215 kg, which is suitable for bikes, camping gear, or light loads.

Inside, the cabin features a twin-cockpit dashboard, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, and a premium feel, with a 360-degree camera available on higher trims.
Safety includes up to six airbags, ESP, hill descent control, and a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating.
Prices start from around ₹25.5 lakh and go up to ₹30.3 lakh ex-showroom, making the V-Cross the more affordable and refined choice for daily use with strong build quality and good resale value.
Toyota Hilux

The Toyota Hilux continues to be the benchmark for toughness and long-term reliability in this segment.
Its 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine delivers around 201 bhp and up to 500 Nm of torque in automatic variants. It is offered with a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox and a proper part-time four-wheel-drive system that includes low-range gearing and a differential lock.
At 5,325 mm, the Hilux is longer than the Isuzu, but has a shorter, 3,085 mm wheelbase. It has a 225 mm ground clearance with very good approach and departure angles. The spacious cargo bed handles a substantial 470 kg payload, which is ideal for heavier equipment or multiple bikes.

The interior focuses on durability, with an 8-inch touchscreen, dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control, and leatherette seats on top trims, though the rear seats are more upright.
Safety features include seven airbags, vehicle stability control, downhill assist control, and a 5-star Global NCAP rating.
Ex-showroom prices range from about ₹28 lakh to ₹35.4 lakh, positioning the Hilux as the premium, go-anywhere workhorse with unmatched torque and legendary durability.
Commercial Pickup Trucks in India

In addition to these lifestyle-oriented double-cab pickups, India has a separate segment of commercial pickup trucks designed mainly for business, transport, and utility runs.
These mainly include the Isuzu Hi-Lander, Isuzu S-Cab Z, Isuzu S-Cab, Mahindra Bolero Pik-Up, Mahindra Bolero Maxx Pik-Up, and Mahindra Bolero Camper.
All these models are classified as commercial vehicles, typically registered under the goods-carrying category with basic interiors and minimal features, focusing on durability, fuel efficiency, higher payload capacity, and low running costs.
These are ideal for small businesses, farmers, logistics, and delivery companies rather than private car buyers for personal and adventure use.

Who should buy a pickup truck?
You should consider one if you need strong off-road capability, high ground clearance for bad roads, occasional heavy load carrying (gear, bikes, camping equipment), towing potential, or a rugged vehicle for adventure trips and mixed use. It suits enthusiasts, farmers with light needs, small business owners who want versatility, or those who value durability over city comfort.
Who should not buy a pickup truck?
Avoid it if you mainly drive in tight city traffic, need easy parking in malls or narrow streets, prioritise fuel efficiency and low running costs like a regular SUV, want a smooth, plush ride with luxury features and a spacious interior, or have no real use for the open cargo bed. Pickups are wide, thirsty on fuel, and less practical for daily urban commutes.
What are the key specifications to consider while buying a pickup truck?
Focus on payload capacity (how much weight the bed can carry safely), ground clearance and approach/departure angles for off-roading, engine torque for loaded performance, 4x4 capability if needed, fuel tank size and real-world mileage, cabin comfort (rear seat space, AC), safety features (airbags, ESC), and service network/resale value.
Can I use a pickup truck as my daily family car?
Yes, but it comes with compromises. Both the Hilux and V-Cross are double-cab, and can seat five, but rear space is average, ride is truck-like and bouncy when empty, and manoeuvring in traffic can be a headache. The massive turning radius does not help either. Pick-ups work best if you value utility and off-road capability over pure car-like driveability and comfort.
