As per Autocar India, Kia India is reportedly developing the second-generation Sonet for a 2027 launch. It will move to the newer K1 platform, replacing the current model’s K2 base, and will share its underpinnings with the Syros.
Production plans for the next-generation Sonet are said to target around 85,000 units annually.
Next-Gen Kia Sonet Platform, Features and Safety
The shift to the K1 platform is expected to bring a new electrical and electronics (E&E) architecture, which should allow features such as over-the-air (OTA) updates and remote diagnostics. Feature upgrades could also include larger 12.3-inch displays, replacing the current dual 10.25-inch driver display and touchscreen.
Safety could see an improvement as well, with the K1 platform using more ultra-high-strength steel in key structural areas. Kia is also considering a camera and radar-based Level 2 ADAS system, similar to the one offered on the Syros, replacing the present camera-only Level 1 setup.
In addition, the next-generation Sonet is expected to address one of the current model’s key shortcomings, which is limited rear-seat space.

Next-Gen Kia Sonet Powertrains
The existing powertrain lineup is expected to continue into the next generation. This includes the 83 hp 1.2-litre petrol, the 120 hp 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, and the 116 hp 1.5-litre diesel, each paired with their respective transmission options.
Kia is also believed to be developing a strong hybrid powertrain for the Sonet, though it is not expected to arrive until 2028 or 2029.

Next-Gen Kia Sonet Competition
With its new platform, additional features, and the possibility of a hybrid powertrain in the future, the next-generation Sonet is expected to strengthen its position in one of India’s most competitive segments.
Once launched, it will rival models such as the Tata Nexon, Skoda Kylaq, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
